I've had to grab for my pants several times in public when they suddenly made a break for freedom : P

And I've had to grab my Dad's for him a few times as well, if he's been carrying something at the time his did the same.

There's a reason a lot of fat guys wear suspenders. Belts sometimes don't work so well, unless you're willing to tighten them so far you 'muffin top'.

Apparently, that something was his pants, and one supposes the reader is to assume the pants in question were ones he was wearing at the time.
