his recent remarks which some are calling racist? I respect that some may interpret his recent comments that way, though I don't agree that they were racist. We can interpret his remarks as we may, but there are people here accusing him of being an unequivocal racist. Why not provide any evidence you might have of racism in MM's past.

(10,611 posts)What he said was ugly and idiotic on its own merits.
If you want to stand by him or still think he's a great champion of progressive causes or whatever, that's your right.
And if I want to opine that he made a jackass statement and if I want to hold him to that any time he wants to try to wiggle off the hook for what he said and intimated, that's my right.

(3,891 posts)When someone alerts on something, and the vote is seven to zero against, we should put the alerter in time out for three days because they're obviously too wound up and need a break from the message board for a bit.

It's not racist like he hates black people, but it's wrong imho.

(62,325 posts)on 'white peoples' reasons for bearing arms'?? Lol, it drove them into a frenzy calling Moore a 'fat racist' himself.
But other than that, no, and it is only here that I have seen his remark giving Obama credit for his historical accomplishment, called racist.

(30,439 posts)What we did not expect was to feel so enraged at one point that we almost walked out. It was when Moore went into a rant about how the passengers on the planes on 11 September were scaredy-cats because they were mostly white. If the passengers had included black men, he claimed, those killers, with their puny bodies and unimpressive small knives, would have been crushed by the dudes, who as we all know take no disrespect from anybody. God save us from such stupid white men, especially now, when in the US and the UK, black people's lives are being ripped to shreds by drugs, lawlessness, fear and frightful violence plus the endless circle of racism, exclusion and incarceration. This is not awesome, Mr Moore; it is a calamity, for descendants of slaves unimaginably more so.

And that trayvon Martin could not be the one screaming for help and it was the one with the gun who was scared.
It plays into the stereotype...blacks are more aggressive, dangerous etc...
Sadly, this stereotype is what leads to so many black men being unnecessarily killed by law enforcement.

(10,745 posts).....than racism against blacks, TBH. Poorly worded? Yes, I'll definitely grant them that, at least. But racism? No.
Cali_Democrat
(30,439 posts)Like I said above, this stereotype is what leads to blacks being disproportionately targeted and killed by law enforcement. Blacks are viewed as more dangerous and aggressive than whites. Moore articulates this stereotype in his statement.
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)But, again, assuming this happened, the context seems quite clear. This wasn't about bigotry against black folks, it was a critique of white men. And, to be fair to Moore, a critique which may not be entirely undeserved, at that.

(10,745 posts)As I myself have said, I do think he was being rather hard on Obama; this president has had to put up with more shit than even Clinton had to deal with.....and he's done plenty of good things(he killed Bin Laden, and signed the universal healthcare law, for one).
I don't think there IS any evidence, that Michael Moore is a secret racist, or that he's even really prejudiced at all, TBH. And I'm not even one of his biggest fans.

(3,891 posts)Here is the interview in question.
So what did he mention as an example of failure of President Obama? The interview was about "Roger and Me" movie which was the platform that launched Michael Moore's career. That movie, for those of you who don't know, is about the decline of Detroit and Flint Michigan as GM and Ford and Chrysler were pulling out for other locations including Mexico. I've seen the movie, and it's heartbreaking the way the towns shrank after the industry that supported the middle class left.
Fast forward to this very year. We've talked about it here. Water turned off at 150,000 homes. Power turned off. Streetlights turned off. Just five days ago, a thread was posted pointing out how the Detroit Fire Department was using a soda can and a fax machine to notify the firemen that there was a fire. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025499039
So Michael Moore says that President Obama did not save Detroit as the President said he had. Again, the subject of Roger and Me was Detroit and Flint Michigan and the auto industry pulling out.
So what is Michael saying? He's saying that we could have had single payer. He's saying that we could have ended NAFTA and brought the jobs back home. We could have done a lot of things to help the unions, the middle class, and the people. Instead, we shored up the insurance industry, health insurance was getting expensive, and people were having trouble affording it, so now they have to buy it. We have 92 million people not in the workforce, a record high in both percentage and numbers since the Great Depression despite the "recovery".
So what is left for the President to be congratulated for in a hundred years? Lincoln of course, won the Civil War, and freed the slaves. Wilson won WW I after failing to keep us out of the war. FDR Saved the economy, and led the nation through nearly four years of war. LBJ will be remembered for Viet-Nam, and most importantly the Great Society. JFK, the Moon landings, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the image of Camelot for the First Family.
But when in another two decades, we finally get the Single Payer we should have now, what will President Obama be remembered for? Bombing the enemies of Assad the year after we wanted to bomb Assad for killing? A Nobel Peace Prize for getting elected? What will his accomplishment be?
That is what Michael Moore is clearly saying. President Obama can't get credit for saving Detroit, it's a shambles. Healthcare is not what it should be, and I've pointed out before. Why would corporations move to Britain which has high taxes to afford Single Payer for lower taxes that what they pay here in the US without single payer. How can out taxes be higher, and we get less for it?
I honestly wonder how many of you have watched the interview, and have seen Roger and Me, and know what any of it is about.
Michael Moore, like many here, including myself, defends the President when he's right.
And we take issue with the President when we feel he's wrong.
Racism is not the motivating force behind all criticism of the President. Watch at least the first video, and see the interview that we are busy talking about. Because you'll see that Michael Moore is focused primarily on Detroit and how it wasn't really saved at all, despite the hype and the claims to the contrary.

(113 posts)...and that's not what the hysterical ones labeling Moore as "racist" want.
I have a hard time thinking of a major public figure in recent years that has been more ANTI racists than Moore. Recall his book Stupid White Men with a major part of its premise being that demonizing Blacks for crime was ridiculous.
And of course who has spent more time taking up the causes of Detroit than Moore?

(25,618 posts)Moore was frustrated about Detroit. I'm going to find my copy of "Stupid White Men" now, time for a reread.

"I took my son to see Michael Moore live at the Roundhouse, in north London, before Christmas. The US radical and author of the best-selling book Stupid White Men was (mostly) clever, funny, angry, sharp, iconoclastic and sceptical about the lies and humbug processed by the US government and big business. Sure there were some flunked bits you expect that, the troughs are part of the adventure, an evening with a well-worn rebel."
