A New York City Catholic group has pulled out of next year's St. Patrick's Day parade, just a week after parade officials decided to allow a gay rights group to march in the event under its own banner..
The Catholic League For Religious and Civil Rights, which has marched in the parade for 20 years, made the announcement Thursday, claiming parade officials changed the rules to allow an LGBT group from NBC Universal to march under its own banner while refusing to let an antiabortion group do the same.
"My reasons for withdrawing from the parade have nothing to do with Cardinal [Timothy] Dolan or with gays. It has to do with being betrayed by the parade committee," Catholic League President Bill Donohue said in a statement. "They not only told me one thing, and did another, they decided to include a gay group that is neither Catholic nor Irish while stiffing pro-life Catholics."
On Sept. 3, parade officials said they would allow OUT@NBCUniversal to march next year in the hopes of ending a political furor that has surrounded the event.

Good, fewer assholes attending now.

(38,506 posts)Bill Donohue is divorced, did you know that?
Son of a gun runs around telling people who can and can't be married, and he's divorced.
I believe in respect and compassion for divorced people, but he does not.
Funny, that.

(45,319 posts)out of a 2.75 million dollar yearly budget. The group has tens of millions on hand. This tired old tactic of claiming he's one nut with a fax machine is simply false. The organization is large, the offices are part of a deal with the Diocese, their boards of directors and advisers are chock full of famous names and vast checkbooks.

(28,272 posts)They certainly don't act like something other than a one-fanatical-member organization. In any case, the parade will benefit from their absence.

(182,877 posts)Donohue was at one time a loon with a fax machine then Fox News continually had him on. Just like Falwell in the 80's Rev. Moon was too unpalatable for the public but the Republicans God Guns and Gays needed a presence on cable news and Jerry was a nice white southern face. Rev. Jeremiah Wright was the dominate force in VCR sermon mailings but they couldn't have him on. Jerry was basically broke but with Rev. Moon money and the free publicity he started making money.

(45,319 posts)when he got the job. He grew the beast, that's for sure,it is the largest Catholic advocacy group in the US But he did so from a suite of offices in Manhattan and using a large staff from day one. His board is full of famous and wealthy names.
These are facts. 230,000 paying members. Not just one guy. I'm sorry if that bothers some who are associated with the same faith, but facts are facts. This is an old group with droves of supporting members. It is a rich group. They don't need free anything, never have. They roll in cash donated from thousands of like minded people.

I think the more conservative Catholics like Bill Donohue of the Catholic League are clueless about the history of Christianity; all the good, bad, and ugly. They are among the ugly.
Compared to Saints Patrick, Brigit, and Columba, the Saints of so many of my ancestors, this Bill Donohue is small, mean, and not so bright. He is not expanding the faith, he withers it. Serious cold water shrinkage.
Much like Mardi Gras, a fabulously gay St. Patrick's Day celebration is a good thing.

(26,505 posts)make fun of this dickhead because whenever the group is mentioned he seems to be the only one representing it. I've never heard of any other spokesman, vice president, treaurer etc. So he's ridiculed as being a lonely lunatic who masturbates to angel porn or whatever. I have no connection to catholcism or christianity. I don't give a shit about either. If those numbers are true. Everyone involved should be embarrassed and exposed, for all I care. You should really look into getting a sense of humor.

(45,319 posts)posters who always come to threads about Donohue. Apparently you are not one of them. Those numbers are true, everyone involved should be embarrassed and exposed. It is also true that anytime there is a thread about him, people will claim he's some solo basement nut. It's a very predictable meme. I've seen it dozens and dozens of times. And I have never found it particularly amusing, no.

(21,691 posts)Donohole is just such a miserable fuckface it's fun to pretend he's an angry old man in a basement, but he's not. He's the ugly face of mainstream 'fundamental' Catholicism. (Mel Gibson and his father are the ugly faces of less mainstream fundamentalism.)

(38,326 posts)My wife and I both have many Catholic and Irish ancestors who fled to the Americas when things got too hot -- to "wild west" U.S.A., Canada, and Mexico.
My own grandparents, who ended up in Hollywood and the Southern California shipyards and aerospace communities, they were very protective of the gay community.
For me, reminiscing, it's sad I've lived in a society where gay people had to be protected like this.
Secrets are corrosive.
I'm still protecting an ex girlfriend. Silence.
Here's a photograph from one of my great aunt's albums of her friend, Hollywood star Ramon Novarro :
He was murdered on October 30, 1968, by brothers Paul and Tom Ferguson, whom he had hired from an agency to come to his Laurel Canyon home for sex. According to the prosecution in the murder case, the two young men believed that a large sum of money was hidden in Novarro's house.
A few prominent LGBT people slept on my parent's sofa when we were kids, sometimes after being kicked out of their parent's homes.
But in 'sixties and 'seventies U.S.A. it was strictly "don't ask, don't tell."
Still crying sometimes...

(135,425 posts)That Donohue ass is such a hateful fella. He should maybe read up on that guy Jesus, whose universal church he claims to tout, and maybe try modeling his life on that fella instead of acting like such a noxious ass.
I'd like to know how he knows that the membership of that 'gay group' aren't Catholic? OR Irish? Surely he didn't take a poll, now, did he? Send out a survey to the membership? And who isn't Irish on St. Patrick's Day?
What a miserable tool that guy is.
