Former Secretary of State James Baker said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday that President Obamas plan to defeat ISIS has "some problems," namely figuring out who are Americas partners on the ground.
Baker, who played a key role in putting together the coalition to take on Iraqs Saddam Hussein and liberate Kuwait back in the 1980s, added to the chorus of people saying that dealing with ISIS is going to involve boots on the ground. And those boots could very well end up being U.S. Special Forces because of the difficulty in bringing together regional allies.
He also said this White House must continue to push the diplomatic angle if degrading ISIS is to have a lasting affect. He called for a global discussion that includes the European Union, Russia and China to conference together on how to "empower the moderate forces in the region."

(16,104 posts)I swear, since they canned David Gregory have moved to the right like Fox News. The second week after Gregory left, all guests were Republican.
As Todd noted Bush and Baker did not take out Saddam in 1st Gulf War, Baker of course knew what would happen (not coalition agreements ended at kicking Iraq out of Kuwait, as historical record) but country would fall apart (no problem leaving murderous despot in place).
So, didn't Bush 2.0 removal of Saddam create all these problems today?
No, says Baker, one of the chief engineers of the Bush coronation through the Supreme Bush Court. Today's problems were created by Obama abandoning Iraq and doing nothing about Syria, and now we have ISIS.
This ancient, decrepit Republican hack, with his ongoing, decades-old, arrogant, condescending self-righteousness, is perfect for the new right wing corporate bent of NBC. They have to be after the viewership of Fox.
They certainly aren't after progressive liberals.

(46,416 posts)There's always SOME ground operation, even if it's small and hidden. Our partners on the ground have been the Kurds and whatever of the Iraqi army we can reliably work with (we don't want to hit POLITICAL targets and take out Shia/Sunni enemies for each other). Baker knows this. His job is to get out there to cast doubt on the operation for Republican purposes, and press for a bigger operation.

(46,416 posts)prior Bush I/II coalitions were, as if it's Obama's fault that he can't get more support--it was precisely Bush II that totally blew up the middle east and made countries hesitant to follow us into further adventures, no matter how necessary. Fuck you, James Baker.
