Ben & Jerry’s Joins Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court Supporting Marriage Equality
September 12, 2014 by Hayley Miller, Digital Media Associate

Everyone’s favorite LGBT-friendly ice cream company, Ben & Jerry’s, has taken another step for LGBT equality, signing onto an amicus brief supporting marriage equality.

The company signed onto “Employers’ Amicus Brief,” along with 30 other global and local companies. These companies are standing up for marriage equality, advocating for their LGBT employees to receive the same benefits and opportunities that other couples do.

“This amicus puts these corporations on record saying that in addition to this being an issue of civil rights, it complicates the running of our businesses,” said Chris Miller, Ben & Jerry’s Social Mission Activism Manager. “It creates this really confusing administrative nightmare for companies— from a tax point of view, and from a benefits point of view.”

Ben & Jerry’s has long stood as an advocate for marriage equality and LGBT rights. The founders joined HRC’s NYers for Marriage Equality campaign in 2011, in support of same-sex marriage in the state.
