First LGBT-friendly mosque opens in South Africa; imam gets death threats

Dr. Taj Hargey, an imam from Cape Town, South Africa, has finally realized his dream of opening a mosque which welcomes all comers, regardless of sexual orientation or other so-called divisions. Not everybody in town is happy about that. Hargey has received death threats.

Male and female Muslims will worship together, interfaith marriages will be endorsed and Sunni and Shias will be allowed to worship at the same service.

Cape Town born Dr Hargey is an Imam and director of Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford. He returned to his hometown in hope of generating a “religious revolution”. Hargey said,
