Fischer: The Sale Of Bacon Proves That America Is A Christian Nation

Your daily dose of derp.

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/fischer-sale-bacon-proves-america-christian-nation

On his radio show yesterday, Bryan Fischer brought up a three year-old incident in which an employee at a Halal-friendly KFC in Australia was suspended for abusing a customer who asked for bacon as concrete proof that America is a Christian nation.

"You want one single item of proof that America is a Christian nation and not a Jewish nation and not an Islamic nation?" he asked. "One single bit of proof is all you need: we freely allow restaurants and grocery stores to sell and to serve bacon. That can only happen in a Christian country."

"So the sheer fact that we freely allow the sale and consumption of bacon," he continued, "is absolute proof that we are, in fact, a Christian nation":

So there's no bacon in Japan? Or China? Or India?

edit: Leave it to Bryan Fischer to ruin bacon.

While we're venting, can I just tell Bryan to

nation is. The Old Testament forbids Jews to eat pork and many follow that tradition even today. Apparently Muslims also do not eat pork.

On the other hand Christians had a tradition of eating ham on Easter to symbolize their freedom from Old Testament ceremonial laws and some still follow this practice. My family does. My guess is that most people do not even know why ham is eaten on Easter so for them it is not connected to any religion.

What Fischer is forgetting is that a whole lot of people eat pork who do not believe in any religion. My guess is that they are in the majority.

The ban on prohibited foods is lifted in the New Testament, but IMHO it's the availability of pork (and the ability to preserve it through the winter) that made it so popular in Europe. Pigs could be fed on scraps, or left to feed themselves in the forest; after slaughter, their meat could be dried or salted to preserve it. Another reason that ham is popular for Easter is that it was one of the few meats left in northern climes by the time Easter rolled around. Lamb is a more popular Easter dish in places like Greece, also largely Christian, but less hospitable to pigs.

Now that large not-exactly-known-for-being-Christian country, China, also seems to like pork. As did pre-contact Polynesians. Has Fisher heard of them?

as they don't believe the 2nd covenant (the New Testament and Jesus) were meant to replace the Old Testament (aka the Torah)....Some Christian churches DO believe it is a replacement....but Fundies definitely do not!

Uh, so does Australia. Specific stores CHOSE not to sell bacon, and were not FORCED to do so in opposition to their choice by the government.

Sort of like vegetarian restaurants in the US who don't sell products with bacon, or any other meat.
