http://www.centralmaine.com/2014/02/27/rep__lawrence_lockman_says_he_regrets_divisive_statements_/

A Republican state lawmaker who has come under fire from the Maine Democratic Party for past statements about gays, rape and abortion said Wednesday that he regrets making the comments.

Rep. Lawrence Lockman, R-Amherst, is widely regarded as a polarizing lawmaker who frequently uses divisive rhetoric during floor speeches and press events. On Tuesday, Democrats called for Lockman’s resignation, following a blog post by a liberal activist that detailed public statements about gays, abortion and rape made over several decades.

The post by Maine People’s Alliance activist Mike Tipping mined press clippings to unearth several offensive comments. In one, Lockman implied that HIV and AIDS could be spread by bed sheets and mosquitoes. In another, he said that the progressive movement assisted the AIDS epidemic by assuring “the public that the practice of sodomy is a legitimate alternative lifestyle, rather than a perverted and depraved crime against humanity.” In a 1995 letter in the Sun Journal in Lewiston, a reader quoted a press statement by Lockman, then part of the Pro Life Education Association, saying, “If a woman has (the right to an abortion), why shouldn’t a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman? At least the rapist’s pursuit of sexual freedom doesn’t (in most cases) result in anyone’s death.”

I mean I know that Southern New England is more liberal across the board than Northern New England...or anywhere in the US...yes, even Seattle, Portland, DC, California and Austin, TX...but still I thought they were liberal enough in the Great White North (as in snowy, though admittedly New England has fairly-poor racial diversity) that all the mouth-breathers had been purged.

They may suck for other reasons...but there's pretty much no such thing as an electable prominent anti-choice Republican here in CT. Pretty sure there aren't too many in MA, RI or lower NY for that matter. I think ME is about to have one fewer.

The quote isn't really pro-rape, it's anti-choice, but the argument is extremely crass, in my opinion.

That tells me he views rape as a sex act and people should be able to freely force their sexual freedom on others.

Doesn't get more pro-rape than that.

He is using the phrase "sexual freedom" because that is how he interprets the phrase "reproductive rights."

It's confusing because he is using a strawman argument, and he doesn't understand pro-choice thinking. If you want to understand people, then you have to begin where they are at.

Exactly. He thinks he has hit on a great argument there. He's not actually pro-rape, but he thinks he's made a great analogy between rape and abortion and we'll all see how women have the "freedom" to use their "superior strength" against the fetus. And from that we will realize how horrible abortion is, and the fetus is like a rape victim.

I admit, I clicked on the link thinking he said some thing that can kinda, sorta, be mis-interpeted to imply he was not 100% supportive of rape victims.

Wow, was I ever wrong.
