General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFor those watching "The Roosevelts" - issues with the feed CONFIRMED - see email from them below
Last night, for the first hour and a half, there was a problem that caused any comments from the various historians to be absent - so we got Peter Coyote doing the narration, a few voicings of the characters, but long stretches of just music - and they showed the historians talking - but they were just moving their lips! For the last 30 minutes the sound of the comments returned.
And tonight - we are getting the historian comments - but a bonus! What must be Ken Burns voice announcing the scene, "reading" the section headings - at one point we heard a voice saying "man with short hair". Just now a voice said "the crowd gathers". Just no -
" a train speeds across a trestle". Just bizarre!
We can't tell if it is a problem with the production or the local feed. So weird! Anyone else experiencing weird sound issues last night and tonight?

(75,480 posts)Maybe you can watch those segments again. I'm sure it was an issue with weather or something that won't repeat.

(2,947 posts)One of the episodes, either 3 or 4, was off on the dubbing, but the rest of the series has been fine. I have watched through episode 5.

Who knows?
But, thanks for posting about it!
When I get to our taping/view (probably this weekend) then I will see.

(84,711 posts)How were you viewing it. Sounds so much like what I've been dealing with in my International feed. ATT/DSL...

What would we give for an FDR today

(60,007 posts)what a story. I haven't gotten an email response back from UNC yet.

(204,786 posts)And it is an amazing production! Loved the footage of FDR swimming with the children at Warm Springs! Glad to hear it's cleared up. I'm watching the repeat since I missed the beginning. And I was responsible for WRAL, WTVD, WUNC, etc., back in the '80s.

(60,007 posts)and as for the regular programming....
Watching the series on PBS is the first time we've actually used the TV for a TV in many months! Usually just a vehicle for Netflix, Roku or Chromecast!
Rhiannon12866
(204,786 posts)But I agree that there's very little worth watching anymore. First there were the proliferation of news shows, Dateline, 20/20, 48 Hours, and they were often interesting, but then the so-called reality shows took over, no more smart writing, talented actors or original ideas, and half the news shows now chronicle grisly murders. I usually watch MSNBC, will turn on Dave or Jimmy or Seth at night and Bill Maher on Fridays, John Oliver on Sundays, that's about it.

(32,006 posts)PBS probably provides audio descriptions for the blind/visually impaired viewers in SAP. That's what I'm seeing you describe here. No political conspiracy.

(2,825 posts)But then I also live in North Raleigh.
It does eventually clear up, but both kinds of problems interfere with my concentration. Still I'm loving this series, and get annoyed when it's over. The crooks back then seem identical to the crooks of today. It never ends!!!

(37,449 posts)the first night I had to switch mine because it was playing the program in Spanish. I have heard a low background talking which sounds like people directing the program or editing. It seems to come and go.

(60,007 posts)Sorry about that (again!).
What you were hearing is called Descriptive Video Service (DVS). It is intended for the Visually Impaired. Newer TVs can access it through a sound setting.
Somehow when Tuesday's audio problem was dealt with yesterday, they left the SD audio on the channel that also carries the DVS. It's not there on most programs so would not have been heard during the day. When the technicians on duty last night heard the DVS during The Roosevelts they called out an engineer who drove to the studio and made the change.
Yesterday, Programming said this about Episode 3: "Due to the numerous complaints concerning audio issues on the SD version of last night's Roosevelts, we will rebroadcast episode #103 this Saturday, Sept. 20th at 10pm, immediately following episode #107. Episode #107 will repeat Sunday (Saturday overnight) at 4am."
They will probably decide today what to do about Episode 4. (Sigh.)

sounds like they were as frustrated as we viewers!
Thanks all for sharing your own experiences. It's good to know that we do indeed know how to use our TV and weren't imagining things!

(70,649 posts)Also, I first tried using my local outlet online and got buffering and stuff. There's a link for Registering/Login for a good HD connection and it allows for picking which PBS outlet to use. I'm through Part 3 (Part 4 was airing).
Here are some TR jokes:
"You have to remember: The president is SIX!1"
and
Alice said, " TR) wants to be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral, the baby at every baptism."
and
Toward the end of his tenure, TR was ruminating on presidents ranked as "great" and that strong factors were war or great crisis, that "LINCOLN would not be known without the Civil War." And COYOTE reads, "He had not had a war or a great crisis. Some people thought that HE was the crisis!1" Haha!1
