Israel ‘Deeply Concerned’ Over Iran Negotiations, Minister Says
By Calev Ben-David September 17, 2014
Israel is worried that the U.S. and its allies might be ready to accept a deal with Iran that leaves it with nuclear weapons capability, Intelligence and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz said.
Steinitz spoke with reporters today in Jerusalem after returning from meetings in Washington with U.S. officials. I went concerned, and came back concerned, he said.
Talks between Iran and world powers about curbing the Islamic republics nuclear program in return for an easing of sanctions are set to resume tomorrow in New York. The aim is to reach an agreement by November.
Israel is concerned that because there are so many other problems -- the civil war in the Ukraine, the civil war in Syria, the war against ISIL in Iraq -- some people might think lets clean the table, lets close the Iranian file, Steinitz said.
Failure to reach a nuclear deal would raise the possibility of increased economic and diplomatic sanctions against Iran by the U.S. and Europe, or unilateral actions by Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will not allow Iran to attain nuclear weapon capability, and all options are on the table to stop that happening, including military action.
