Paul Harris dailymail.co.uk 31 March 2014
For more than two centuries it has been respected around the world as a sign of Britains greatness. Now the Union Jack, the nations proudest symbol, is poised to get a history-making new look minus the Scottish saltire.
Secret Government papers propose ditching the cross of St Andrew, a white X on a blue background, that makes up a third of the current design if Scotland votes for independence, the Daily Mail can reveal today...
...The Daily Mail can confirm that the Scot-free flag is already in production at Britains longest-established producer.
Undercover pictures taken inside Flagmakers of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, show a red and white design exactly as described on the Downing Street papers.

(102,225 posts)and admittedly, I've always wanted Northern Ireland to gain independence, though the accord seems to have worked in recent years.
But, I'm at best equivocal about Scotland secession...If the vote is exceedingly close, I think this will cause more problems than it could ever "settle".
Best of luck to the Scottish people, however it turns out.

(27,101 posts)I'd recommend just the St. George's cross on the white field (the English flag), but I don't know how they want to incorporate Wales.
Maybe have the Pendragon in the upper left quarter?

(45,476 posts)Why would England remove the blue? Just claim it stands for the blue sky over their tiny "Empire" or claim the blue stands for banking which is all that matters in London.

The blues are different anyway.

(10,201 posts)I was simply answering why they would remove the blue, since the blue in the flag represents Scotland (even though it is a darker shade).

(1,235 posts)could this have been an "April Fools" joke on the part of the Daily Mail?

Probably up for a vote, if they're going to change it. I can't see them keeping the Union Jack, it would be a fraud in everyone's face every day.
Time will tell.
edit: Good catch! You're wide awake.

(101,306 posts)and looks completely like a quick mock-up, and nothing whatsoever like an actual photo of a document held in someone's hand walkiong along. And has silly stuff like "they're already making them, even though the vote isn't for another 5 months, and indepedence wuold be at least 18 months after that".
