From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, has been the target of several assassination threats and alleged plots.
Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, has been the target of several assassination attempts and alleged plots since he first became a presidential candidate in 2007. Secret Service protection for Obama began after the Senator received a death threat in 2007, while serving as the junior Senator of Illinois and running for president. This marked the first time a candidate received such protection before being nominated.[1] Security was increased early for Barack Obama due to fears of possible assassination attempts by white supremacist or other racist groups or individuals against the first African American major party presidential nominee.[2][3][4]
Some of the threats have been extended to members of Obama's family, including First Lady Michelle Obama.[5][6][7][8] Obama and his officials have generally declined to discuss death threats against him since entering the presidential race.[1][5] While some commentators have suggested the unusually high amount of death threats surrounding Obama are at least partially tied to the use of racist imagery and words used by some of Obama's critics to describe the president,[2] in 2009 the Secret Service stated that the volume of threats against Obama was "comparable to that under George W. Bush and Bill Clinton."[9]
North Carolina Waffle House threats
Jerry Blanchard, an accountant from Charlotte, North Carolina, was indicted for threatening to kill Obama during a July 15, 2008, breakfast at a Charlotte Waffle House.[5][10] Two customers said Blanchard told them, "Obama and his wife are never going to make it to the White House. He needs to be taken out and I can do it in a heartbeat."[5] The customers contacted the Secret Service, who questioned Blanchard. He denied making the threats, but allegedly told the Secret Service agents he believed Obama was the Antichrist prophesied in the Bible.[5][10] The Secret Service later got a second call from an employee of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Charlotte,[11] where Blanchard was overheard in the lobby restroom saying into his cell phone, "I'll get a sniper rifle and take care of it myself. Somebody's got to do it ... We both know Obama is the anti-Christ."[5] Blanchard had claimed he would buy a sniper rifle and pistol from the Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte. The gun shop owner said Blanchard has visited the store but did not buy any weapons.[5] Blanchard was placed into custody on felony charges of making threats against a major candidate for president, and a psychiatric evaluation was ordered. It was questioned how much evidence existed that he planned to actually go through with an assassination attempt;[5][10] later, according to a federal affidavit, there was no proof of any furtherance of his crime.[12] In June 2009, Blanchard was sentenced to one year and one day in prison for making the threats. He was also fined $3,000 and ordered to be under supervised release for three years following his prison term.[12]
Miami bail-bondsman training threats
Raymond H. Geisel was charged with making threatening statements against Obama during a bail-bonds training class on July 31, 2008, in Miami, Florida.[10] During the course, Geisel referred to Obama with a racial epithet and said, "If he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself."[2] Geisel also threatened to put a bullet in the head of then-President Bush, although Geisel later claimed he was joking. In his hotel room, authorities found ammunition, body armor, a combat-style hatchet, tear gas, a loaded 9 mm handgun and four loaded magazines. Geisel said he collected firearms, and was only using the gun for his bail-bonds course. Geisel remained in custody for a month.[2][10] He later plead "not guilty" on August 20, 2008.[13] With trial date set for January 2009, in December 2008 there was discussion of a plea agreement for Geisel who faced up to thirty years in prison if convicted on all four counts brought against him.[14] In December 2009, Geisel was convicted on weapons charges and served three years' supervised probation stemming from that conviction. The threat charges were dropped as part of his plea agreement.[15]

(34,589 posts)Impossible.
I once happened to be staying at a hotel when Dim Son was staying at the hotel next door. The security was utterly insane, it freaked me out. People with sniper rifles on the roofs, scared the hell out of me when I was walking down the street and saw that crew watching me closely.

(83,754 posts)They jumped the fence today. A man made it across the lawn. My President has had an unrepresented amount of death threats. They hate him because of the color of his skin.
I find it incredibly sad when our President is judged by the color of his skin and not what he stands for.
Hey, please explain who or what Dim Son is? Not a freaking link to be found. Are you doing a funny again Manny? If you are, I find that sad and pathetic.

(37,457 posts)the intruder made it just inside the doors at the North Portico of the White House. This is just fucking unheard of. President Obama needs to clean house at the USSS after a full investigation. This is completely inexcusable, and yes, I would say the same, although with less vigor, about an attempt on a Republican President.

(34,589 posts)- Roughly one out of every 700 of my posts get hidden
- There seem to be a high number of alerts against my posts - which, based on the results DUers share with me, are typically 7-0 or 6-1 "leaves"
- I've been told that a group of DUers plots offsite to attack me, including hiding my posts, and one even admitted to that behavior
- Probability and sampling theory are at play
I'm not reading too much into that hide. But in any case, it is water under the bridge now.
That being said, I hope that I have earned a little credit by avoiding the use of that horrible word you kindly made me aware of. It's a day-to-day struggle, but I try.

(83,754 posts)I am laughing here! LOL! my post is ridiculous!?
History Lesson Here. WE HAVE THE FIRST AFRICAN PRESIDENT AND HE WAS ELECTED IN 2008!! Well of course they that were assassinated would be white before 2008. A black man was only first elected in 2008.

(82,383 posts)Of course all previous Presidents were white.
President Obama has had more threats, and fortunately came along at a time in modern technology and awareness of security.
FFS Lincoln wouldn't have had much protection, and it happened to him because there was someone willing to do it.
JFK rode in an open motorcade when he didn't have to. Didn't they have a bullet proof top he could have used?
former9thward
(32,003 posts)Just because Obama is black does that mean everything that happens is because of the color of his skin? The SS has denied Obama gets more threats than other Presidents. Maybe you have better info than the SS.
JFK rejected the bubble top. The SS wanted him to use it.

The whole point can be learned from Sesame Street, if we only listen--this is what the people who wish POTUS ill are singing:
This is not an issue to be taken lightly, particularly when one considers the problems the Secret Service has had lately in terms of their personal conduct and attention to detail.

It gave me hope that there are people in this world and on this board who understand where "satire" and "snark" end, and poor taste and lousy judgment begin. It's not about political differences among Democrats when children are brought into the conversation. It's just wrong.

(18,634 posts)I noticed the day before, during lunch, several scary looking men in black types with dark glasses and things in their ears just standing on corners watching everyone on the street. I guess they start security scanning the day before he arrives anywhere.

(146,290 posts)I've been around presidential security details several times. They were watchful, but they weren't watching me in particular. If they had been, I'd be wondering why that was.
Maybe they have read your posts about the President somewhere and think you don't like Barack Obama. I don't know how they'd get that idea, of course, but that could be it, maybe.

(34,589 posts)jumped back to where they began in time to check me out?
Or perhaps the current Secret Service, who read my posts, jumped back in time to warn Bush's security detail?
Or perhaps a bunch of guys on roofs had nothing better to do than watch a person walking down a fairly-empty street at night.
So many possibilities.

(146,290 posts)I just find it curious. I've been near presidential security for every president, starting with Nixon. (45,251 posts)anyway, but that is not exactly what they ruled. IIRC, the SCOTUS said Congress was just renewing the Voting Rights Act based on info that had not been up
dated in like forever. I don't think that it is the business of the SCOTUS to requre Congress to update its info, so I think the SCOTUS overstepped (what's new?).
But, it seemed as though the SCOTUS left the door wide open for Congress to hold new hearings and update its info. It has not done that and shows no signs that I know of of gearing up to do that. Nor does anyone seem to be pushing Congress to do that. Pity.

(5,714 posts)But not so unbelievable, unfortunately, when you consider that this President is the first black man to hold an office that up until his election in 2008, was reserved (de facto) for white men.
The racists and bigots of this country can't stand the fact that a black man-who, just an aside, is more intelligent, more articulate, more knowledgeable, more family-oriented, more compassionate, and IMHO, more representative of where America is going (and thanks heavens for that!) than all of the lousy, pathetic racists and bigots in the country combined-they can't stand the fact that a black man has power and authority over the United States as President, and that a majority of voters elected him to represent ALL Americans-including the racists/bigots, whether they like it or not.
THAT is what is driving the hatred and furor against President Obama.
