Allentown schools ban boys from field hockey

Allentown high school boys are officially banned from girls field hockey teams.

The Allentown School Board voted Thursday in favor of the ban, which comes on the heels of a new Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rule that bars girls teams with male players from participating in post-season play.

Concern over female player safety was the driving force behind the PIAA's rule, which was passed in June.

"I just think it's common sense," said board President Robert Smith Jr., citing safety concerns for female players. "The boys play with the boys; the girls play with the girls."

Sing along with the Billy Joel song:

If you're a boy in Allentown,
you can no longer play field hockey now
so buy a helmet and skate on ice,
put on your gloves,
and pads on tight
