The GOPs Blunt Amendment: Regarding contraceptives
... An amendment, the Blunt Amendment, was also proposed that "would have allowed employers to refuse to include contraception in health care coverage if it violated their religious or moral beliefs," but it was voted down 51-48 by the U.S. Senate on March 1, 2012

The Republican 'War on Women' Is Real
... the GOP "War on Women" is real and it has real-world consequences for the millions of women whose lives can and will be impacted by legislation that erodes more than a century's worth of progress on women's reproductive rights. There were over 1100 antichoice provisions introduced in 2011 and 900 antichoice provisions introduced so far in 2012. Legislators in 13 states have introduced 22 bills seeking to mandate that a woman obtain an ultrasound procedure before having an abortion. Of these, seven states are pursuing the state-rape vaginal probe variety. In addition, legislators in 13 states have sponsored right-wing "Personhood" type bills, too extreme even for the electorate of Mississippi, that could make both abortion and reproductive choices highly restricted. ...

(30,733 posts)This bill singles out abortion clinics for unnecessary and expensive restrictions, making it harder for women to get abortion care in Illinois. It also adds another one million dollars a year in costs to in inspect all these clinics that have suddenly become ambulatroy surgical treatment centers. Illinois is broke as it is.

WASHINGTON -- Former Republican congressman Pete Hoekstra, who is now running to unseat Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), weighed in on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act on Thursday, saying the law was a "nuisance" that shouldn't be in place.
The issue came up during a campaign event in Royal Oak, Mich. An attendee asked whether Hoekstra would support or "work to repeal" the law if elected to office.
"Will, you know, will repealing it be a priority? If you came back and said, you know, that's really the thing that's hurting my business the most. My guess is there are other things that we can do that have a higher priority in terms of what I, what I believe might need to be done. I think you know we need to create -- that thing is a nuisance. It shouldn't be the law," replied Hoekstra.

To date (Mid 2011?), legislators have introduced 916 measures related to reproductive health and rights in the 49 legislatures that have convened their regular sessions. (Louisianas legislature will not convene until late April.) By the end of March, seven states had enacted 15 new laws on these issues, including provisions that:
*expand the pre-abortion waiting period requirement in South Dakota to make it more onerous than that in any other state, by extending the time from 24 hours to 72 hours and requiring women to obtain counseling from a crisis pregnancy center in the interim;
*expand the abortion counseling requirement in South Dakota to mandate that counseling be provided in-person by the physician who will perform the abortion and that counseling include information published after 1972 on all the risk factors related to abortion complications, even if the data are scientifically flawed;
*require the health departments in Utah and Virginia to develop new regulations governing abortion clinics;
*revise the Utah abortion refusal clause to allow any hospital employee to refuse to participate in any way in an abortion;
*limit abortion coverage in all private health plans in Utah, including plans that will be offered in the states health exchange; and
*revise the Mississippi sex education law to require all school districts to provide abstinence-only sex education while permitting discussion of contraception only with prior approval from the state.

(6,335 posts)I've heard Republicons lament that they wish they could repeal the 19th amendment because it would be a shoo-in for Romney. One guy said it has ruined the nation because they vote with their emotions which has led to a plethora of "socialist" programs and election of socialists.
