General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was at the Climate March, at least 500,000 or more.
It started on Central Park West with over 30 blocks packed with people.
At one point it stretched from North of the Museum of Natural History to Times Square.
When half that space is full on New Years Eve they talk about millions being there.
The cops there said they thought it was at least half a million or more.
The crowds were massive, the under-reporting is shameful.
Just look at the pics, it was much bigger than they are saying.

(9,463 posts)segment that edhopper's image depicts and multiply it by many times because, from the top of that building, the street was curb-to-curb and stretched as far as the camera could see up and down the street.
This may be a shot from that vantage point looking in one direction but the other direction was the same:

(31,296 posts)i shared this on fb so at least my friends will hopefully get a clue. the ptb are hellbent on driving this planet and all life upon it into a ditch apparently, and they own the media.
thank you for being there i wish i could have been.

(8,812 posts)The fossil fuel industry works in much the same way as the tobacco industry.
As long as people have doubt, the status quo continues.
The corporate media's job is to sustain that doubt. That's why they can't accurately report on the number of people who have assembled to sound the alarm about climate change. It would undermine efforts to maintain that sense of doubt.

What a beautiful sight.

(13,877 posts)have often wondered...where do they go to the bathroom? Are there porta potties along the way? I know there is likely food and drink? But that many humans in such a small space...wow.
Just one of those trivia questions that cross my mind.
dhol82
(9,649 posts)there were water stops along the way. at the end of the march there were theoretical portapotties. Can't say that I saw them since I did not ask.
Food trucks were available at the end of the march. Weird thing was that there were no trash bags in that area. Had to carry out my trash to the main street. Just odd.
Also - if you start out having peed and pooped how much more do you need to do in the two hours it takes to walk the circuit?

(37,317 posts)It started around noon and we didn't start marching until 3.
Glad I was towards the front.
When did you guys finally finish?
edhopper
(37,317 posts)There were porta potties along the way. Central Park also had bathrooms available.
As for food, it's New York freakin City, there's food everywhere, or people just packed a sandwhich.

(13,877 posts)number of people.
Being from the West Coast, I thought about where everyone would park. But they have public transportation there.
Anyway, thanks.

(9,649 posts)There were many groups from out of town who came in big buses.
I am local so was able to take the subway directly to the start of the march. Don't think it would have been easy to take the local bus. Traffic was, essentially, at a standstill throughout most of mid Manhattan.
My apartment overlooks Seventh Avenue on the way to the Holland Tunnel. Last evening the backup was momentous. Not sure if it was marchers or some problem in the tunnel. It was a sea of red brake lights. The organizers had requested that people not drive to the event but to use bikes, mass transit or group transport.

(96,882 posts)ABC news is reporting 300,000 which is certainly within the ballpark of your personal estimate. If you believe that there's a conspiracy to under-reportm, please provide evidence.
edhopper
(37,317 posts)The official count know seems to be around 300,000.
The cops along the way were telling me it was more like half a million.
Like I said, look at the pics and think about 40 city blocks that crowded.
I've been there on New Years Eve, when they say over a million, there were more today.
I was also in the Iraq War March in 03, they misreported that one as well.
brooklynite
(96,882 posts)Now presumably, if the media is down-reporting the turnout, they're also disputing the reality of climate change, right?

BTW I saw the initial reports were after the march, when I got home.
I suspect the had to amend due to the internet.

(14,691 posts)it was filled up to there. When the front lines of the march reached 42nd & 11th we in the back were still in the '70s. Keep in mind this wasn't a "straight line" route. First turn was at 59th then down a couple long blocks to 6th, turn onto 6th then down to 42nd and another turn. We clogged traffic good that day.

Maybe they will report it when the streets of New York are too flooded for anyone to march.

(14,255 posts)The people in charge just do not care, and they know they do not have to care.
It is not a measure of our freedom of speech that we can say anything we want on the internet, it just means they are supremely unworried, and can always kick our doors down later, if they feel like it.
