A record number of homeless students were enrolled in US public schools last year, according to new numbers released Monday by the Department of Education.
The data which most experts say underreport the actual number of homeless children in America showed that nearly 1.3 million homeless children and teens were enrolled in schools in the 2012-13 school year, an 8 percent increase from the previous school year.
The new data means that a record number of kids in our schools and communities are spending restless nights in bed-bug-infested motels and falling more behind in school by the day because theyre too tired and hungry to concentrate," said Bruce Lesley, president of the First Focus Campaign for Children, in a statement Monday. "This is a desperate situation, and the first step we must take is to get homeless students the housing assistance they need today by passing the Homeless Children and Youth Act.

Would our leaders care about America's homeless children if they could blame it on ISIS?
Our 'leaders' have proven time and time again, they don't give a damn about Americans,.
They don't even give a damn about children, elderly or even Veterans of their wars based on lies.
And yet, we are expected to believe that they care so much about Iraqis and Syrians that we must spend our dwindling national wealth to eradicate ISIS...to help them.
Is there anyone in the real world actually buying this warmongering bullshit, and that these murdering assholes care so much they want to bomb people?

(17,193 posts)A similar question has been asked in re the environmental "accidents" that have tainted water and poisoned citizens -- if a "terrorist" group pulled that kind of thing, we'd be all over it, but since it's a corporation, ah well, business as usual. Oh, and a $50,000 fine.

(11,417 posts)There is a program called Continuum of Care. Those are groups of HUD sponsored programs for homeless families in various communities.
The Fiscal Year 2014 amount from HUD for this one program for homeless families is $1.83 billion. Not much compared to our wars but just to say some of us are working on the problem.

(6,896 posts)people who feed from the money the problem generates have NO interest in solving the problem.
quite the contrary. there are solutions, mitigations and responses that dont require a billion or more dollars.

(6,896 posts)the federal money homeless people bring in is hardly an incentive to solve the problem if you subsist on that flow.
there are many ways to skin a cat. money wasters unwilling to stem the flow are not the ideal solution.

(28,254 posts)That's how these sorts of things go: new schools in the distant countries in which we wage war, and our own kids just have to make do.
