As soon as I read the OP, I knew someone would post a pic of some repub doing the exact same thing. Obama puts his foot on the desk, the RW is outraged. Then someone posts a Pic of Bush with his feet on the desk. Obama wears a tan suit, the RW is outraged. Then someone posts a pic of Reagan wearing a tan suit. When will these guys ever learn?

maybe a hundred here...

But, no one has yet mentioned that civilians are not supposed to salute. It's reserved for the military in uniform. It's particularly bad form for civilian government officials to salute because of our separation of militay and civilian authority.

Reagan was the first President who saluted, and, because he was Reagan, no one but a few misfits complained. He mumbled something about being Commander in Chief as his excuse, and the whole thing was wrapped up as part of the Reagan patriotic circus. Now, it seems to be accepted. Required, even.

Did Eisenhower or Carter, who were formerly military officers, salute? Does the Secretary of Defense salute?

But Saint Ronny did it so it became de rigueur for all subsequent presidents even though it's neither truly customary nor correct. But you can just imagine the howls of outrage if the current president correctly decided to stop doing it because he's not a military officer in uniform.

... that is what first came to my mind. They don't have to salute. I wonder when this started? Reagan? Might it be appropriate if the President is a Veteran? I think it all got started with all the military worship and overkill patriotism since 9/11.

Never understood why other presidents continued it, but I guess it's out of fear of being tagged as anti-troops like, well, here.

Obama is basically likable popular enough to be elected twice as President not to be taken lightly. When listening to an Obama hater wait for some variation of "it is not because he is black" you know instantly it is because he is black.

A bunch of people are going to be pissed off no matter what he does.

Civilians are never required to salute anyone at any time, but they also are in no way prohibited from doing so - the rules about how, when, where, and whom to salute apply only to military personnel, and civilians are not bound by them at all. I think it's bad form for the President to salute, since he's a civilian. Better that he acknowledge them with a nod of the head or a verbal greeting.
