George Takei’s Special Message for National Voter Registration Day

Star Trek star and social-media phenomenon George Takei is featured in a new P.S.A. aimed at getting young people to register to vote. In the clip, which is premiering on VF Daily, Takei has a special message for “straight young couples,” whom he says will “produce the gay babies of tomorrow.”

“I’m George Takei, and I’m straight . . . up asking you to vote,” Takei says. “I’m especially concerned about the future of this country, because I’m concerned about the gay people of the future. We need to ensure their good life, by registering to vote.”

Our Time, a non-profit that claims more than one million members and works to register voters, produced the Takei clip as part of a series of get-out-the-vote efforts. Also figuring in this campaign are Jenn McAllister, better known as JennxPenn, who has 1.51 million YouTube subscribers, and Taryn Southern, who has 384,000 YouTube subscribers.

In an e-mail, a representative for OurTime.org said the organization registered 350,000 voters in the 2012 presidential cycle, and that it aims “to capitalize on a new paradigm among millennials, whereby YouTube, Twitter, Vine, and Facebook stars influence their online activity more than traditional TV and Hollywood personalities.” (Takei’s the rare celebrity who has effectively crossed the bridge from TV icon to social media guru—he has more than 7.7 million Facebook fans, and often posts memes on his page.)
