Edit: Just watched this again, and @ 0:22 dude says "drug withdrawals in the baby" which is a crime punishable here in Tenn.
When newborn babies begin to withdraw from powerful drugs, they shriek at a high, telltale pitch. Cut off from the substances they ingested through their mothers, they convulse, projectile vomit or writhe from skin-scorching diarrhea.
Their tiny bodies shudder violently. They cannot be consoled.

(38,311 posts)... it's one of those drugs that, when it works, the unpleasant side effects are more tolerable than the condition being treated.
Besides, the patents on Effexor have expired and it's available now as generic. (So, of course, the pharmaceutical corporations create variations of it that they can patent, and the cycle continues.)
Anyways, I wouldn't accept any sort of medical advice from a cheesy computer animation.
Nor would I accept any medical advice from a pharmaceutical rep or religious fanatic.
I have regular prescriptions for a couple of medicines. They keep me out of the hospital, maybe even the morgue. None of my medicines are fun, but the alternative of "no drugs" is worse. I've tried the "no drug" alternatives, the "natural" alternatives, and I end up in the Emergency Room. No thanks.
The "war on drugs" is disgraceful, and laying guilt trips on anyone who takes drugs is disgraceful too. Yeah, some people take drugs recreationally. So what?
And some people become addicted to drugs. Alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, amphetamines, opiates, etc.. That's a public health problem and ought to be treated as such.
has been weaning herself off of it for over a year.
It's not been fun.
Drugs are drugs, the TV says diff. as do the Dr's.

(38,311 posts)I'd been taking a high dose twice daily for many years.
DON'T DO THAT. Don't be an idiot like hunter.
I was getting annoyed with the side effects, one of the odder ones being anorgasmia. I also figured that or the NSAIDS were making my ears ring. (My ears still ring, but I've learned to live with it.)
My roll of the dice in life came up with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and asthma.
Off my meds I'm a homeless feral human with severe asthma and a frequent flier to hospital emergency rooms.
The worst of it began in my late adolescence. I quit high school. I was "asked" to leave college twice. It took me nine years to graduate from college and by that time the campus and local police knew my name. Maybe when I was twenty-five I finally understood I wasn't going to be functional without meds. I really didn't want to be chained to either doctors or pharmacies, and for far too long I wrongly figured I could survive by sheer force of will.
Left to my own devices I'm still not a medically compliant person, but I've got people in my life who will smack me over the head with a metaphorical 2X4 and drag me back into reality whenever I begin to drift off into my dark place.
Anyways, binary thinking about drugs (yes/no, for/against) is very destructive. I feel the same about illegal drugs as I do prescription drugs. The only humane path is harm reduction. Treating addicts as criminals or treating drug addictions as a moral failing only fucks people up worse.

(62,325 posts)ANYONE who ever thought the Government cares about them, must have been on drugs. At least since before WW11.
For all the prosecutions of people selling a few Oxycontin pills and getting 10 years, the government never asked the manufacturer why they are producing a billion pills a year of a drug that is marketed to extremely ill cancer patients. If legitimate prescriptions would amount to 30 million doses where does the manufacturer think the other 970 million doses are going? Those type of prosecutions or investigations NEVER happen.

(2,805 posts)My father's oncologist always had a catered lunch available to his office staff every single time we were there. I have no problem with the nurses getting a free lunch, but you know it had to be paid for on the "backend" somehow.
Then again it was pretty obvious when the weekly steroid shot cost $1500. That is probably $750 for the doctor to administer a syringe of medicine. A monkey could give a syringe injection. And old people are supposed to come up with their 20% copay out of a fixed income. Ugh!

(7,809 posts)that I'm 56 years old and I don't take any prescription medicine - and quite proud of that. He seemed pleased as well.
But my nonprescription drugs are caffeine, nicotine (vaping), ibuprofen, and sinus allergy meds on the rare occasion they are needed. Oh, and 2~3 beers a week.

(979 posts)and it has been the best thing ever for me. I used to shake, get panic attacks, be anxious all of the time... and since I quit it, my life has changed a lot. I sleep better, I'm not tired all of the time like I used to be, and I don't feel like I'm going to crawl out of my skin constantly.
Caffeine, in my opinion, is a much worse drug than some of the supposed "drugs" that the government tries to regulate. If you want to talk about addicting, talk to the line of people out the door at the Starbucks that I pass. It's ridiculous.

(10,597 posts)If they took my prescription drugs away from me, it would be like sending me into hospice. I might live a month, tops. There's no narcotic among them. I take them exactly as prescribed. Sometimes, the Doc will take me off of something, no problem. Sometimes the Ins Co steps in and changes a med without notifying my Doc, which I contact the Doc about post-haste.
I had an older brother who decided he was not going to take his meds because he thought they would kill him. He lived for about 8 more years, but passed way before his time with a massive stroke. To say he was bull-headed would be an understatement. I miss him terribly. Still can't believe he's gone.
