Woman punched by California Highway Patrol settles for $1.5 million

Source: Associated Press

A woman punched repeatedly by a California Highway Patrol officer in an incident caught on video will receive $1.5 million under a newly reached settlement, and the officer has agreed to resign.

CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow confirmed the settlement in an emailed statement Wednesday night and an attorney for Marlene Pinnock confirmed the terms for The Associated Press.

The settlement came after nine hours of mediation in Los Angeles.

... The July 1 video of Andrew punching Pinnock by the side of a freeway was captured by a passing driver and spread widely on the internet and television.

She will not get $1.5 million. Her legal team will take 25%-40%, typically, I believe. NYC_SKP Sep 2014 #1

That's the shame of it. In fairness, I don't know the terms of the representation in this particular case but it's usually pretty significant.

Wouldn't it feel better if the state or city had to cover the attorney costs?

In this case, however, I love the lawyer who was once a police officer herself and who now takes on civil rights cases.

I'm glad she got money, but I don't care if she got a billion dollars, this pig needs to be charged with attempted murder. He was in the act of beating her to death and only stopped because another cop arrived on the scene. I'd like to see him do time in the general population of the California prison system.

In LA, he'll probably get promoted.

that the cop agreed to resign. Coming to a small county Sheriff's department somewhere soon, I'm sure.

Where else can you get a job where you can beat a defenseless woman to a pulp and your penalty is to resign?

Makes me sick.
