Unclear Rules: Why Philippines Pulled Out Peacekeepers In Syria

NEW YORK - President Aquino confirmed Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) that the Philippines is pulling out Filipino peacekeepers from the Golan Heights ahead of schedule amid worsening security there.

Aquino told the New York Times that most of the Filipino soldiers "have departed for the Philippines, with the rest to follow."

Asked the reason for the pullout, he said: "The rules of engagement, the terms of engagement, are not really clear."

Military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Ramon Zagala earlier said a total of 244 of the 344 Filipino soldiers and staff were being pulled out of the Golan Heights region between Israel and Syria.

"Troops are being repatriated because of the deteriorating security situation," Zagala said, adding the United Nations had approved the withdrawal.
