Grace: At tribal wedding, a bride in buckskin and beat of a buffalo-hide drum

KENT SIEVERS/THE WORLD-HERALD

By Erin Grace / World-Herald columnist

PRAIRIE ROSE STATE PARK, Iowa — The bride wore buckskin. The groom released a hawk. Then the couple, draped in a blanket to signify their union, proceeded up a hill to the beat of a buffalo-hide drum and the chant of an old language.

It was a unique end to a modern wedding that involved a tepee, an American Paint Horse and a tribal elder who blessed them with eagle feathers and cedar smoke.

KENT SIEVERS

As the ceremony comes to a close, Brett, left, and Fran release a red tail hawk, brought to the wedding by SOAR, a raptor rehabilitation facility in western Iowa.

When does anyone ever get a chance to see that?
This is one reason why Fran Vogel wanted to have a Native American wedding. She could offer a rare experience. In so doing, she could also pay homage to the Plains Indian tribe to which she belongs.

This was a great day for the heart and spirit. Thanks for posting this. Some say we are in the time of the eagle and the condor and will be joined together, to learn from each other.
