I know there's some overlap in the choices, but I'm curious as to what people are most concerned about here.

(25,699 posts)Some dooms are doomier than others, and "us" can be anything from the voices in your head, to every possible life form stretching the breadth of the universe.

(25,699 posts)Humans, as a species, are going to live past it. We've got at least another two hundred thousand years left in us, barring, y'know, asteroid impacts or something.
However while our species is durable, we as individuals aren't, and our "civilization" sure isn't.
For most of our past we were a tribal hunter-gathering species. I imagine that for much of our ftur, it will be the same. We're never going to spread out to other planets in any meaningful way, and our resources "at home" are limited. Even with perfect management, there are walls we can't climb over.

(4,657 posts)... in Antarctica. The MIC will lobby for a bombing run with new, sophisticated weaponry which will accidentally accelerate climate change by melting copious amounts of snow and permafrost. An up til then unknown, but highly contagious, form of Ebola will be let loose from its frozen, dormant state and will begin spreading in a pandemic - Aggressive countermeasures will be stymied in the Republican controlled Congress - placed into power by ignorant voters - so as not to give Obama any credit, and also to prevent a market crash and the loss of Billions on Citrus futures. Future generations of human mutants will study these events from the Asteroid Weyralfuctd, which struck the Earth at the height of the pandemic, thereby interplanetarily transferring our species to its new home.
So, actually - the Asteroid's going to save us.

(8,830 posts)If anything gets us, it will be a collective loss of reason and common sense, replaced by knee-jerk hysteria; over-reaction; and blindered fear of anything and everything.

(10,745 posts)Other than that, though, maybe in the far future, assuming we hadn't colonized space or anything, I'd place my money on a gamma ray burst or K/T event. Either of those two really could wipe out humanity entirely.....even a full-fledged nuclear war in the '80s couldn't quite reach that level.

(9,796 posts)I could have picked climate change or the Republican party or the military-industrial complex. But in the end, I picked unbridled capitalism because that's the underlying cause of the other three.
