An Apple A Day

It’s really none of my business what kind of garbage you choose to believe:
~alien abductions, faked moon landings,
~a government conspiracy to subjugate us all by providing decent health care,
~magic e-mails that bring you money if you send them to 10 friends in 10 minutes,
~people who talk to ghosts or heal through the magic of their TV set,
~trickle-down economics and Free-market Jesus,
~the evils of buttons and dancing.

You have the right to believe what you choose to believe. Even if it contradicts what I believe. Even if it twists and perverts everything I believe.

That’s the way the world is supposed to work.

So if you want to believe that some people are superior to others simply because of how they look or the country they were born in, or how they call to God- then you have at it, friend.

If it validates you somehow to refute decades of proven research in astronomy, geology, astrophysics, medicine, chemistry and paleontology, to insist that the Earth is only 6000 years old and birth control pills cause abortion- well that's totally your business.

If you feel more secure when you “protect” your children from public schools that pollute young minds with radical ideas about diversity, tolerance and evolution, go ahead. Knock yourself out! It is not my place to say if you are right or wrong in matters of faith and the heart.

See how that works? It’s called ‘respect”.

But …

When you insist that MY children be force-fed your doctrine of willful ignorance, based on mere superstition, or the way you want the world to be-- insist they be taught things that fly in the face of all empirical evidence …. No. That is not OK.

If you need to believe that global climate change is a myth, then believe that. But when you try to make us all live under policies that mean that my grandchildren, all our grandchildren will inherit a poisoned, dying planet: when you try to coerce our leaders into placing theology, opinion and political ideology - your personal garbage- over actual facts......then you go too far.

You see, science is not a democracy! You don’t get a vote on evolution, or physics or genetics any more than when I let go of an apple, you get a vote on whether or not it should hit the ground. You don't have to like facts, or believe them. And in a torrential downpour, you *can* stand on the corner screaming that it is a sunny day. You have that right. But I will not stand by and let you make it illegal for the rest of us to carry an umbrella.

If you want to condemn the people that I love without ever knowing them beyond some label you put on them, you can do that. I pity you, but I won’t try to pass a law to stop you. That’s where you and I are so very different, for you seem to need to stamp out all thoughts and ideology that differ from yours in order to feel validated. I do not. Hate if you must. That is your right, and not my business.

But do not think that I will remain passive if you try to make your prejudice the law of the land. For when you insist that our nation withhold certain basic rights from some of our children because you have managed to convince yourself that human rights are an abomination, I will fight you with the last breath in my body.

You have a right to believe whatever you choose to believe and shape your life to accommodate it. You DON'T get to change MY life based solely on that fact that you like your garbage, and your parents and grandparents carried around the same garbage- as if that makes it somehow important. Or true.

The times are, indeed, a-changing. You don’t have to move forward with us into the future, toward enlightenment, acceptance and love, and away from greed and entitlement and fear…. but you have no right to stand in the way of those of us who choose to do so.

That's why, each and every election, you will find me in the voting booth. Because while truth is not a democracy, America still IS.

No, I am not voting to take away your right to believe whatever stupid shit you need to believe! That's your game- not mine. You can stay in the past, in superstition and fear and oppression, if you want to.
But I won't let you force my children and grandchildren to suffer the horrible consequences of your refusal to open your eyes and acknowledge the apple of truth that has hit us all on the head.

My eyes are open. And I VOTE.

As far as I'm concerned, all we owe each other is respecting the right to believe as we each choose. The particular things that are believed themselves, however, don't automatically deserve any special respect whatsoever just because you label them "beliefs".

As soon as you state that you don't want the beliefs of some people to have negative impacts on the lives of other people, you're already in the business of downgrading those beliefs, of relegating them to be something to be humored, tolerated only when indulged to harmless effect.

That's not respect. And I have no trouble with that personally. As I've said, I'm happy to say that not all beliefs deserve respect, only the right to hold them.
