(34,648 posts)When the "vast majority" start arresting bad cops then you can pull that tired ass line out and dust it off and try it again. Until then, all of the silent cops are just as guilty. They are allowing their fellow officers to run amok.
I find it disgusting when people can't wait to protect cops that murder young black men, but never rush to defend the dead kids. It's a fucked up way to exist, I feel dirty and sick when I read posts from cop apologists who defend men who murder black kids.

(8,170 posts)Brow was distant, had his hands raised and the kill shot was made whilst he was on the ground. Are you saying that Michael Brown had a gun buried in the roadway and the cop thought that he was in imminent danger? What justifies the initial shot which was from the back according to all witnesses?

I suppose if DU were around at the time there would have been a lot of people getting an account just to pop up and post "we don't know if Emmett Till's beating death was justified" because he might just have actually "assaulted that poor white woman" when he whistled at her.
Because, y'know, all those young men of color are by potential criminals by default.
BTW, even every good judge knows there are never just "two sides" of any story, even if only two people were involved in the incident. Some people should sit down and watch Rashomon a few times...

(34,189 posts)I guess they didn't hear about the judge's Injunction.
October 06, 2014
Law enforcement officials can no longer force peaceful protesters in Ferguson to keep moving on sidewalks when they are breaking no law. Federal Judge Catherine Perry granted a preliminary injunction this afternoon in the lawsuit Mustafa Abdullah v. Saint Louis County et al., regarding the five-second rule.
In August, law enforcement officers began enforcing a new rule in the area where demonstrators had gathered in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown. The ACLU of Missouri called it the five-second rule because protesters were told they could not remain still for more than five seconds, but law enforcement invoked the rule for many things including standing still for more than five seconds, just standing still, and walking back and forth over hundreds of yards in the protest area. The rule has no statutory or regulatory reference number and has not been released to the public in print.
The rule of law is essential to our constitutional system of government, and it applies equally to law enforcement officers and to other citizens, wrote Judge Perry in her ruling.
Vague rules that are applied in a haphazard fashion tend to increase community tension, said Tony Rothert, legal director of the ACLU of Missouri. Judge Perrys injunction is a huge win for peaceful protesters and those who believe in the rule of law.
http://www.aclu-mo.org/newsviews/2014/10/06/judge-grants-preliminary-injunction-aclus-five-second-rule-l
They may be safer, though - the cops may not have heard about the judge's Injunction either.

It's been half a century since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and we still have this kind of crap going on in the mid-south.
I have seen several white-skinned folks marching on those live streams and I think that's a good thing.
Someone upthread said that this is (basically) lynching... I am sure that they are right.
And as the white lady who was in a video yesterday because her partner is black and they were pulled over for no reason said, "I'm sick of this shit."
I lived through being called the "N-word" back in the 50s and 60s and 70s (among other social slights) and I'm pretty sick of this shit too.

scarystuffyo
(733 posts)tblue37
(68,436 posts)"Out of the bars and into the streets," and a bunch of the kids in the bar joined the march. I think sometimes the white kids, especially the college kids, join such protests because it is an "adventure," cool to say they were there. But I do think a lot of them, even the ones who are at least partly in for the thrill of it, also do recognize that these murders of young black men by cops are really, really wrong, and they do want to protest against them.
I am an old fat white woman with a cane who cannot stand or walk very long, but if I could get there, I would be marching, too, though I would have to take a lot of breaks.
This is lynching, and it serves the same purpose--to intimidate black citizens and keep them "in their place." Back when lynching was done openly and sometimes even advertised in advance so people could pack picnic baskets and take their kids to watch, some white people shared pictures of the murders the way kids used to trade baseball cards. During that period, the police, sheriffs and sheriffs' deputies in the area were not merely complicit in allowing the lynchings to go on, but often actually the leaders and organizers of the murderous events.
All too many LEO departments, especially in the most racist parts of this country, are staffed partly, or even largely, by the same sort of people who gleefully participated in lynchings. I realize that at least some people go into law enforcement because they really want to serve, though even those people are bound to risk being corrupted by the pernicious culture of so many departments. A lot of their corrupt attitude is about abusing their power over any citizen, but they know that if they try it too much with white people, they will get reined in. Of course, if the white people they assault belong to sufficiently marginalized classes--like the mentally handicapped, the very poor, or certain subgroups of teenagers--they will go after them, but only because they assume that those people can be safely abused, without repercussion.
LEOs who cannot go along with the abuses committed by their "brothers in blue" will usually be hassled out of the department, or they will just quit in disgust.
However, an awful lot of people who become LEOs do so because they are attracted to the idea of having power over others, especially if they believe they will be allowed to exercise that power without accountability. I once knew a young man, a fairly heavy drug user with a bully mentality, who wanted to become a DEA agent or a cop. He always said, "I would have a gun and a badge, and access to drugs. The best of all worlds!" He was the sort of person who really could get into positions of responsibility because he could "present" well, despite the nastiness of his real character. If he had not contracted a debilitating disease, I bet he would have become a cop.
Cops with that abusive mentality assume that they can go after pretty much any black person, regardless of that person's age, gender, or status (but especially young black men, of course), and most people will accept whatever BS story they come up with to claim that their victim became belligerent, resisted arrest, attacked the cop, reached for their own waistband or for the cop's gun, seemed to have a weapon, etc. Of course racism pure and simple is a main reason why they attack black people, but part of the reason is that the cops don't feel the need to show any restraint when interacting with a black person, because they believe that no matter what they do to the black person, most people will accept it as having been justified.
That the cops throw off all restraints when interacting with a black person is evident in the way they typically approach black citizens, even for a minor traffic stop, like a seatbelt violation (!): the cop comes in yelling curses and shouting peremptory commands, often drawing his gun before there is any reason to. When approaching a white citizen under similar circumstances, a cop will usually (not always, but usually) speak reasonably politely, and the gun won't be out unless something specific causes the cop to think he needs it.
Consider what happened to that poor guy who was shot when he tried to comply after the cop (who had approached him in the first place only for a seatbelt violation) demanded his ID. Witnesses say the cop already had his gun out as soon as he got out of his car! The young black man had just pulled in to the gas station. He didn't even realize there was a cop on his tail, because having done nothing wrong, he had no reason to think a cop would be following him. But the cop already had his gun out. For a seatbelt violation!
I think that is one aspect of the LEOs' racism: they automatically assume that a black man is always going to be dangerous, almost as though having black skin is a weapon. They also assume that a black man is going to have drugs or weapons on him. In fact, I actually doubt whether the cop approached that man over a seatbelt violation. I bet that was just an excuse to check him out in hopes of finding a weapon or drugs, so he could meet some sort of arrest quota that he carried in his own mind or that his superiors "unofficially" imposed on the cops in the department.
That off-duty cop who shot the kid last night was doing random "pedestrian checks" (!) of young black men, and when the 4 he first approached ran from him, he chased them (Why?). Then when he mistook his victim for one of those 4, he chased him. Why did the first 4 run? Maybe they did have drugs or weapons on them and didn't want to get in trouble. Or maybe young black men make the rational choice to run from any cop who approaches them, since any interaction with a cop so often escalates to the point of their being beaten, arrested, or killed.

Point is, if he wasn't in uniform and yet pursued this man, while pointing a gun at him---it might explain why the victim raised a gun and fired at the pursuing officer (if he did). He didn't know it was cop. Thought it was a robber, a gang member--who knows.

(68,436 posts)young black men who are not doing anything criminal? The story the killer cop tells is that he was chasing one of 4 men he had stopped to do a "pedestrian check" on. When they ran, he chased one, and he claims that this young man was one of them, though the eyewitnesses say the victim just happened to be in the vicinity of the chase when the cop mistook him for the one he was chasing and started chasing him instead.
But what right did the jerk have to be chasing any of the young men in the first place? Apparently the fact that they are black is all the justification he needs for chasing and shooting at someone for not submitting to his "pedestrian check."

(38,958 posts)St. Louis is not part of St. Louis County, but rather a separate County unto itself. St. Louis County is made up of the area surrounding the City and includes such cities as Ferguson, Olivette, Florissant, Overland, St. Ann and host of others along with including some areas that are not incorporated into cities. It is a bit confusing for those who are not familiar with the "interesting" nature of government in this area.

A St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officer working a second job as a security officer shot and killed a young black man, VonDerrit Myers Jr., in the Shaw neighborhood in south St. Louis Wednesday night. The incident occurred in the 4100 block of Shaw Boulevard.
St. Louis police chief Sam Dotson told reporters that the unidentified officer was patrolling the neighborhood in the car of a local security company, Hi-Tech Security, when three young black men, including Myers, caught his attention near the corner of Shaw and Klemm Street around 7:30 p.m. When the officer made a U-turn to investigate further, the three men fled.
Dotson did not say specifically what made the officer suspicious about the three men in the first place, but said the officer believed Myers was carrying a gun by the way he ran when he fled.
The officer caught up to Myers and the two others in a gangway in the 4100 block of Shaw, ordering them to surrender and saying they were under arrest. Myers, Dotson said, continued to advance toward the officer, and a physical struggle ensued, during which Myers had his sweatshirt pulled off, revealing what turned out to be a 9mm Ruger pistol. Myers then pointed the weapon at police, Dotson said, and fired three times before his gun jammed. The officer returned fire, discharging his own weapon 17 times.

(68,436 posts)other than being black and catching the eye of an off-duty cop who felt he had the right to do what he himself referred to as random "pedestrian checks"?

(3,211 posts)I'm from around here, husband was born in St. Louis and it's odd. St. Louis is not in St. Louis county.
Great link. It sounds like the cop is on the city force but was working for a private company at the time. I wonder who hired them and why.
It was dark, so how could the cop say he "believed" he saw a gun? He better have some major evidence of a crime. Otherwise it is blatantly shooting a person because they were black.
There are some crazy storms here in the area today. Heavy rain and major lightning. I wish it could not this crap out of the country entirely.
This. HAS. GOT. TO. STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!

(19,964 posts)This is bullshit. There's a lot more going on here -- we need to know why this man was patrolling the neighborhood, what this "Hi-Tech Security" firm really is and why they are acting like raging "night riders" against the citizenry.

(17,997 posts)One of her clients was a Gold Coast neighborhood of chicago. She had private security guards, usually off duty cops but not always, patrolling the area. They all had guns. The non cops had gun permits but no real training, just the basic, and made minimum wage.

March 05, 2011 12:15 am BY JENNIFER MANN
ST. LOUIS A man claims in a lawsuit filed Friday that he suffered brain injuries at the hands of an off-duty St. Louis police sergeant who was working for Hi-Tech Security, once a major "secondary employer" of city officers.
The timing of the suit appeared coincidental with a St. Louis police search Thursday of a home that public records show belongs to Hi-Tech's owner, Adam Strauss. The department would not say what it was looking for or what it found at the dwelling in the 4000 block of Laclede Avenue in the Central West End...
...Finney said his client, Andrew Himeless, 28, spent three months in rehabilitation but still cannot move his left arm and has trouble walking....

(10,559 posts)but spread lies long enough, and some folks believe them.
I have lots of questions, including why the killer thought he was justified in stopping, chasing or shooting people.
But you have your concerns, and I have mine.

(68,436 posts)(That sounds like the BS story Zimmerman told about Trayvon Martin!) But this version doesn't have any bushes at all.
And how exactly does a person run in a way that suggests he has a gun? If the gun was, as this story claims, tucked into his waistband, then how would it influence the manner of his running so that a cop could tell by looking that the kid had a gun?

"The officer initially lost the man but found him again when he jumped out of a bush. Lt. Col. Alfred Adkins told the Associated Press a struggle then ensued."
