"She's so stubborn she'll probably insist on going inside"

It's near the end of door-knocking season now

The man at my next address is intently trimming the monkey grass along the walkway between his front door and drive, ear-protection on and head down

I don't want to startle him so I stop five or six feet away, make minor noises, and gently move my clipboard back and forth, hoping he notices

This doesn't work and he gradually comes towards me until he about a foot away, when he suddenly jerks slightly as he realizes I'm here

I apologize for startling and tell him why I'm in his drive

He's not upset. He wants the information I have, and he'll vote Dem

I ask about some other names at the address. One is his mother, in her nineties. He says she may have trouble

I explain how she can vote curbside, without leaving the car. He's interested in that information too

She can walk but needs to cart her oxygen tank along with her

"She's so stubborn she'll probably insist on going inside," he says with a smile. I express my admiration for her spirit

He thanks me for the information and says he was just thinking today about how to find this stuff out

It's all happy smiles and I'm on my way again

An hour later a light drizzle in falling. In the distance, someone is mowing the lawn, and the combined smell of the cut grass and rain on an unseasonably warm day gives me a curious sense of early summer. The rain is getting heavier, but I only have two more doors to knock. And then, just as curiously, I find myself on a porch littered with wet broken acorns and wet brown leaves, and the smell of summer has faded into a memory

There are snow flurries expected tomorrow night in the North Georgia mountains not very far from me. But they won't come down to the Atlanta area where I live.

I've only canvassed once. I really don't like such "cold visits," but I admire those who can do them!

Sounds like you got some crucial information to voters, and that's the best part of it all.
