(25,699 posts)Like, the brown stuff from Denmark made with actual licorice. it has a lovely bittersweet, earthy flavor, almost chocolatey in a way. Black vines are the closest you'll find in most stores. I'm fortunate enough to live in a heavily Norwegian community, and thy eat the stuff like, uh, candy i guess.
But the evil black shiny crap that has 'anise flavoring" instead of licorice? Yeah, that tastes like soap.

(8,646 posts)We didn't really get much candy corn here in Canada - it's not widespread but I've tried it. Ick.
Black licorice. ew. My parents LOVED that I hated it, LOL. I gave it to them.
These chewy candies - they look like they should taste like caramel but they tasted like a mix between coffee and feet. They are always wrapped in a halloween theme. You can only get them at dollar stores now. I remember at school there was *1* kid who liked them. We would give all of ours to him, lol.
Tootsie rolls. I HATE these. This was another one of those candies my parents were SO happy that I hated, LOL. My kids and my ex LOVE them and tonight, they fought over them.
Almond Joy. Last year, it was so funny. After Halloween, my SIL ended up with a load of Almond Joys (she didn't look closely when she was buying a mix of bars to hand out, and they didn't have very many kids come to the door). My SIL has a fierce sweet tooth but is not a fan of coconut (she assumed Almond Joy meant chocolate and almonds, LOL) so ate all the leftovers but Almond Joys. We had a family dinner and my SIL thought to bring them to give to the kids. My kids were all "thanks but ew, coconut". So my SIL tried to give them to me. Um, no. My mom ended up with them, LOL. She's the only one that likes them.
ETA: BTW, I have no idea what circus peanuts are. Anyone care to help me out on that one?

(58,846 posts)They are definitely stale, and most certainly chewy. I'm not sure why they're still in the cabinet, except as--perhaps--an experiment about which I've since forgotten. When I saw this thread, I took them out and took a whiff. The aroma has not dissipated. It very much reminds me of a liquid medicine Mom gave us (1970s) for stomach ailments like intestinal flu. I will be the first to amit that the scent triggers less-than-pleasant memories.
I'm glad you enjoy them, though, and I hope I haven't put a ding in your enjoyment of circus peanut, seaglass.
Thanks, those DO look disgusting. But I'm not a big fan of flavored marshmallow products (and I hate banana flavored candy). I have never seen those around here at all. Interesting.

(28,552 posts)... will remember "Banana Bikes".
They were my least favorite, and even as a child (a trait I retain to this day) when I have something to eat I prefer to eat the least appealing stuff first to get it out of the way and save the best for last.
So I ate a quantity of Banana Bikes. I was not in a position to waste any candy, no matter how low on the satisfaction scale.
I promptly threw them all up and never ate one again
But yes, circus peanuts and candy corn are right up there on the inedible scale

(114,615 posts)The caramel never set properly, the popcorn was soggy and stale, and it was the only thing to hit the trash as soon as I emptied the bag.

But I was thinking, I don't think I really had any candy I got trick or treating that I didn't like. It might not be a candy I would have spent my dime on at the candy store, but because I worked hard to get it, I think I enjoyed even the not so good stuff.
The thought of Milk Duds now makes my fillings vibrate. But oh, I remember playing with those tiny boxes that only held 2 or 3 Duds.

(40,416 posts)I never remember candy corn or circus peanuts being a big thing on Halloween. (And I was born in the 40's!)
I hated hard candy, which seemed to always have some awful flavor like cinnamon-spinach, or broccoli-cherry. And there was all the cheap, wrapped chewy candies which just tasted like shit.
Everybody knows that the best were the real candy bars, of any sort. Butterfingers were high value. If you did not like them you could always find somebody who did for a trade. Mounds and Almond Joy were rare, so they had extraordinary value for trade. (Nobody did, especially Mounds -- yummy dark chocolate.) Snickers, Three Musketeers, and Milky Way were also good. Then there's Baby Ruth -- I called them Baby Rot. Everybody gave them out. They were utterly worthless. They tasted like shit on top of it. No wonder they always ended up at the bottom of the bag.
Hope everybody had a nice Halloween. I spent it watching end of the world movies -- always good fun. Began with Dr. Strangelove. Ended the night with On the Beach (Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire -- his first dramatic role -- and Anthony Perkins) and Miracle Mile (does anybody know where I can find a helicopter pilot?). In between, there was the live CBS dramatization of Fail-Safe, a remake of the 60's film. I threw in The Day After for good measure.
I love the smell of nuclear charred flesh in the morning, but possibly only on Halloween.
Hope everybody had a great Friday. It snowed here all day. A perfect excuse to warm ones hands with nuclear Armageddon.
