Levon Helm in 'Final Stages' of Battle With Cancer

A very sad note just appeared on the website for Levon Helm, the drummer-singer of the Band. "Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer," says the note. "Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey. Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration...he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage."

The only US-born member of The Band and a true American Original. Thanks for all the good music, Mr. Helm...

Every year I kept telling myself I would get down to one of his Midnight Rambles, and have never been.

I am sure he is comfortable and surrounded by many, many friends and family.

My thoughts go out to Levon an those affected...

Thank you, Levon!

19. Robbie Robertson Sends "Love and Prayers" to Levon Helm at Rock Hall Ceremony
Tue Apr 17, 2012, 05:30 PM
Apr 2012

Robbie Robertson sent “love and prayers” to his former bandmate Levon Helm during a speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday night. The remark has caused many fans to speculate about Helm’s health. Robertson and Helm have been at odds since The Band split in the late ‘70s—Helm’s feelings toward Robertson even pushed the drummer to sit out The Band’s 1994 Rock Hall induction ceremony.

Helm has been ailing for the past few weeks. The Band co-founder underwent a medical procedure earlier this year but was well enough to perform in March. Helm’s health was called into question once again last week when he postponed a series of shows due to a slipped disc in his back. Despite issuing a statement last week saying his health was otherwise “excellent,” Helm also cancelled his performances this past weekend. In other news, fans who purchased tickets to one of those postponed shows received a message stating, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Levon Helm band show slated for April 6th at The Wellmont Theatre, will not be re-scheduled. Levon and the band thank everyone for their continued support and are truly sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused.”

Levon, you will forever be remembered with your memorable performances--none more than that captured forever in Scorses' "the Last Waltz".

So very sad to hear this....
