However in Obama's first term it seemed like his go-to move, unfortunately. And compromising too early in the process makes you look week and encourages your political rivals to demand more compromises. And of course when your rivals main goal is to deny you any victories, there's not much value in it.

Obama is a Wall Street Democrat - he identifies with Wall Street in a lot of ways. So he's already internalized some of their beliefs and desires - but on other issues he's been better and fighting more.

for when it goes against basic principles. For instance, if taxes are to be raised some compromise is possible on the rates, but no compromise should occur if the major burden falls on the poor and middle classes. If taxes are to be cut, no compromise should be made to allow the lion's share to go to the wealthy.

Compromise should result from both sides giving as much as they are getting. We rarely see that any more.

Compromise is necessary in the real world and it can be a good thing. Unfortunately, not much compromise is possible with what the republican party has become. They are very much absolutists in their demands. For them, it is give me everything I want or I'll shut down the government.

Republicans ran on hating black people...where's your compromise on that issue?
Republicans ran on impeaching Obama... what is he going to take half the week off now?
Republicans ran on repealing ACA... what are we just going to have people without health care again?
Republicans ran on climate change being a fraud...if only they told the climate.
Republicans ran on Keystone pipe line...Ah gas the "future" of the energy industry.

A tax rate you can negotiate. Hate, fear, and reality you can't. Where were these compromising Republicans on any liberal issue WE want to compromise on: woman's rights, fair trade, progressive tax system, gay rights, equal pay, universal healthcare, jobs plan, infrastructure rebuilding, net neutrality, information age regulations, banking regulations etc... I've been waiting my whole F'ing life for them to compromise on just one thing that would help America. Who wants to compromise on how much shit you have to eat? No one.

yet expect Ds to capitulate on everything. And sadly, we often do. Makes me nauseated at levels that I can't even express.

But those were the good ole days when fixing a fucking bridge wasn't a partisan issue.

But when one side has continually offered compromise (i.e., the Democrats) and that offer has been completely and utterly snubbed by the other side (i.e., the Republicans), then there comes a time when it is necessary to simply stand your ground and be tough enough to last lounger at the staring contest (i.e., make the other side give in once in a while FIRST).

NOW is that time. I hope Obama holds the line and refuses to budge. I realize that sounds stubborn and unreasonable. But again, Dems have offered compromise too many times before with the Republicans refusing to even allow discussion. Then the Republicans run off to the talk shows and cry about Democrats not working with them. Wah! Wah!! Wah!!!

Of course, when republicans say they want democrats to compromise, they're really expecting us to kowtow to all of their wishes while completely ignoring progressive values and the will of the people vs. corporate interests.

Is "compromise" doesn't mean to us Dems what it means to the repiggies. I'm reminded of the old story. Two boys are walking along. The smaller one finds a candy bar, and shouts, I found a candy bar. The bigger boy says, "I want it! Give it to me!" An argument and a fight ensues. An adult passer by intervenes, listens to the story and says, "We can fix this easyily, we'll compromise. Split the candy bar!" Of course had the adult been a repiggie, he would have said, "We'll compromise. Give me the candy bar!" Which he promptly ate.

YET we have PROOF that that is not true. The GOP has not compromised in 35 years and still was able to win back Congress with overwhelming support from the media. How do you compromise with a group that refuses to compromise? Buy them an expensive dinner? A nice car?

YES, in the real world - where adults are in charge - compromise is important for a healthy political system.

with the fuckers, its time to work against them. Scorched Earth.

Of course, this is Obama we're talking about, and since he has a spine made of wet kleenex, he will probably give the rethugs everything they ask for.
