Unbelievable - Hasidic (Ultra Jewish) law protects pedophiles
"In exchange for political support, Brooklyn politicians give Hasidim latitude to police themselves. They have their own emergency medical corps, a security patrol, and a rabbinic court system, which often handles criminal allegations"
And within that system, child abuse by the leaders of that community go unpunished.
Rather a long read, but a man whose child was sexually assaulted has to get "permission" from the Hasidic court and his Rabbi before going to the police to report his son's abuse. During the agony of his search for justice he finds other victims, some going on for years. Then when justice is served (87 days in jail) the father finds himself the pariah of the community.
And this has seems to be an echo of how the Catholic church handles their abuse problems:
"When children complain about being molested, the council almost never notifies the police. Instead, it devises its own punishments for offenders: sometimes they are compelled to apologize, pay restitution, or move to Israel."
I love ethnic differences in our too often bland American culture-but this goes beyond the pale and is just wrong.
