Most of what Obama has gotten done, Nixon wouldn't have tried.

Expansion of protections of wilderness areas and adoption of fuel standards.
Appointment of more women and minorities to the federal judiciary (not hard to top Nixon who didn't appoint a single woman to the Judiciary and only 7 or 8 African Americans).
Expansion of rights for gay Americans working for Federal government.
Expanded funding for Violence Against Women Act.
Lily Ledbetter fair pay act.
Kagan and Sotomayor on the Supreme Court (Nixon: no women out of four appointees, one of whom was William Rehnquist).

The list could go on for a long time.

Shinola was immortalized in colloquial English by the phrase "You don't know shit from Shinola" which first became widely popular during World War II.[29]

In the 1979 film comedy The Jerk, the character Navin R. Johnson (played by Steve Martin) is tested by "Daddy" (Richard Ward) on whether he knows the difference between shit and Shinola before leaving home.

Ween released a 2005 compilation album titled, Shinola, Vol. 1 that plays on the colloquial phrase mentioned above.

Dolly Parton wrote the song "Shinola" - which also uses a lyric that plays on the colloqial phrase - for her 2008 Backwoods Barbie album.

Many are quick to condemn President Obama. I'm not one of them. When I voted for him both times I said I'd have his back. I do. The willingness of others who claim to have voted for him to throw him under the bus is a reflection of their spines. Not of mine.

I am to the left of President Obama. I don't believe anyone else who could have gotten elected could be doing better than the job he has been doing. If it were me as President I'd have been characterized as a raving lunatic by now, lol.

because I haven't spent too much time here lately.

But ANYONE on DU who praises Nixon over Obama is no Dem I know ... or ever want to.

I was there when Nixon was Veep, when he ran against Kennedy (and lost!!!!), against Humphrey and against McGovern (where he won ), leaving Democratic devastation in his wake and laying the groundwork for the dysfunctional USA of today. I once had an opportunity to meet him in person ... and refused to do so.

He was one of the biggest obstacles to US recognition of so-called "Red" China for decades. It is a travesty that he was actually the one under whom relations between our two countries improved.

It was also on his watch that the Chicago School "tested" its cockamamie theories in South America - check out Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine for one. There are so many other reasons why I still loathe and detest Nixon that if I continued, this could become a magnum opus.

As to the last one, while I agree that there were some progressive achievements that took place while Nixon was President, a LOT of the credit for those has to do with the fact that Democrats controlled both the Senate and the House at the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Presidents_and_control_of_Congress

Most of those Democrats were VERY progressive and popular Democrats who were not afraid to champion progressive causes. They also had a base who supported them through thick and thin for the most part.
