Last week, the city council of Manteca, CA unanimously passed two ordinances aimed at clearing out the homeless population.
One will ban people from sleeping or setting up encampments on any public or private property as of December 4, although the homeless wont be jailed or fined. It will, however, allow the police to tear down any homeless sleeping areas as soon as they appear without having to be invited by the property owner, as was the case previously.
Explaining why the ordinance is necessary, Police Chief Nick Obligacion said, The goal is actually to correct the wrong. So, if the correction is them leaving Manteca, then thats their choice. He also opposes any sort of shelter for the homeless.
The other ordinance bans public urination and defecation, but also comes after the city temporarily closed public
restrooms in a park, a location often used by the homeless to relieve themselves in private.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]We have large numbers of our population who are completely devoid of compassion for their fellow human beings, or of any kind of empathy or humanity.
There are no words for how disgusted I am by them.

If you were homeless what would you do in the face of this cruelty? Many of these people have a mental illness.
Reagan started this shit. Reagan decided it was more important to give wealthy people tax cuts than take care of sick people that had no resources. This is just one of the many reasons that Reagan was a complete asshole.

(6,896 posts)so many of the most heinous lashouts against homeless residents have taken place in Santa Cruz, San Francisco,
and other areas, with such widely misperceived thin cracking veneers of uber liberalism seemingly concealing the
elite violent jackbooted oppressors within.
American citizens having their property destroyed and their civil rights raped and murdered by local politicians doing favors for out of area investors and local developers. Facades of care are erected, and gobs of federal funding poured into small buildings. meant to house less than 70 occupants, while hundreds and thousands go without.
in no way replacing the hundreds of low and no income housing projects and motels that have been shuttered and bulldozed.
the horrendous, inhumane, internationally unlawful behavior of politicians and officials in our government at every level, as it applies to both homelessness, and poverty as a whole, is PROOF POSITIVE that this system is corrupt in every conceivable way, and our fellow citizens will continue to be treated the way we allow them to be treated, as long as we continue to allow it.

(33,688 posts)It is no longer necessary to use the methods that Nazi Germany used to obtain a like hold on the population and implement a comparatively hard form of fascism. I set out the reasons why I believe this to be true herein.
Control mechanisms and media psyops are much more subtle now than they were in 1930s Germany and a significant share of the populace - possibly as high as 40% exists in a paranoid, twilight world of pre-brainwashing/conditioning. Pre-existing bigotry and the impossible-to-overstate effects of religulous dumbing-down have already pushed that segment of the population into a willingness to believe literally anything they are told by their authority figures. They have been reduced to a state so pathetic they would happily vote to liquidate themselves if they were told it was the will of lily-white, blue-eyed, Caucasian Republican Jebus and the almighty R party that they do so to get the uppity blacks, latinos, women and gays back where they're "supposed" to be. Offer them a 50% pay cut and a subsistence existence to realize that goal and they'd be on it like a duck on a june bug. Never before has there been so carefully manufactured a group of people who are such absolute zilches they will destroy themselves with a smile on their faces. That is terrifying and has no real precedent in human history of which I am aware. These people aren't like the masses of Germans who "went along to get along" - this is a huge base of lemming-like "people" whose true-believing minds function at about the same level of a six-year old that still believes in SANTA CLAUS and the Easter Bunny. The belief is absolute and the critical faculties are ZERO, facts be damned.
Another reason that TPTB are so successful is that they hold absolute power over all the major media. Which systematically marginalizes everything and everyone that doesn't serve their corporate fascist vision not by eliminating them but by making them invisible in the mass media. They electronically disappear rather than literally disappearing and the effect is the same. Nothing can be allowed to interfere with the media propaganda, which as Goebbels proved, is by far the best and most cost-effective way of controlling the masses
They don't need concentration camps, which might attract public or international attention - they can already spy on everyone in the country. Dissent need not be stamped out on a mass level when it cannot mobilize effectively, and the responses to Occupy showed that effective mobilization is now a thing of the past. Individual dissenters, even giants like Chomsky, pose no threat, so why bother publicizing them by arresting them? Media erasure is much easier and cheaper.
They don't need messy, hard-to-hide death camps - they can passively cull the herd by making health care inaccessible to the "undesirables." Goldman can always engineer the necessary commodity shortages to facilitate starvation as an adjunct, and do it all in the name of free-market capitalism. Nothing can be done about the omniscient "free market." Suck it up or die, preferably the latter.
Two actual similarities do need to be mentioned. (1) The militarized police are starting to look an awful lot like a super-Gestapo, accountable to absolutely no one; (2) "War Forever" is now the official state policy.

How dare the lowly homeless use a public bathroom to go to the bathroom. Of course, in a sane world, the city would install bathrooms for the homeless (and other members of the public) to use.

(3,732 posts)All the localities then race for the lowest common denominator of aid to "incentivize" the poor to "move elsewhere" and regard more generous localities as stupid because they will just "attract" the "riffraff". You see the same dynamics play out with the funding of general assistance wellfare (handled by county), the provision of low income housing, the permission to "feed people in public", etc. It's just one big scramble to shift the poor people from your city to the next city over.
That's why these problems need to be handled at the Federal level. But then people scream "Big Government!" and "States Rights!" But if you don't lay down policy on poverty even-handedly from above, you get this kind of burden-shifting BS from the localities.
