Found several years ago that the intentness of some to cling to arguing and escalating beyond any point of actual communication made it quite unpleasant to engage. This "discussion style" also made it seem as though if one didn't have hours to spend to debate/defend a post, than it wasn't worth posting a comment. When the first wave of a heated topic flamed high - I got sucked in. While working 60-70 hrs. I felt so strongly about the issue, and about how some - imo - horrific comments/commenters made it passed multiple juries, that I let my star membership lapse for the first time, and became less inclined to post.

However, I still think this is a good place for news aggregation, and for a quick read of the impulses of multiple sides of political "common trending" thought. In LBN get quick read of headlines of a far reaching nature, and in GD can see what the Teaparty is going nuts over, what the GOP leadership is doing, of what mainstream dems are focusing on (or not focusing on), and what progressives are pushing/reacting to. Even while I often no longer have the time, patience, or thick skin to wade into (let alone) start discussions, I still find it a great place to take a pulse.

I rarely get agitated by this place, as I once did. Sadly, I suppose, because I stopped being deeply engaged. Yet I still read at least twice a day, and in this way still find myself pretty well informed. Lately I have had a little more time - and have weighed in here and there. No longer being a regular commenter, few respond. Don't think I have been trolled here in a very long time.

I say that to encourage you to take a break - but see if a little distance can make this place "work" for you on your terms. Then again, for some other long-timers who have stepped away - that has been the best terms for them, as they found that it was too easy to get sucked back into dynamics (trolling) that were detrimental (per the point of agitation and the amount of time required to keep responding).

Listen, I got mad at work today, yelled at my supervisor, stomped out and took and extended break, and played with the idea of driving right out of the parking lot and never coming back.

It was due to a combination of little sleep, work overload, and the lingering remains of a giant burrito I'd eaten last night still clogging my energy.

Fortunately, cool heads prevailed; I went back in and finished the day; and my supervisor was fine- he knew I'd been over stressed.

I'm on DU at least twice a day for the politics, labor, news, and everything else.

You're the guy I count on for the labor portion. I just like having a labor-oriented brother posting here.

and absolutely related to the cultural and spiritual history of Native Americans, particularly Plains Indians.

This subject evokes strong feelings regarding the injustice of America in the genocidal treatment of Native Americans historically, and the ongoing treatment by the US government today. OS posted a link to a story regarding the birth of a white buffalo - at the time reported nationally - and the mysterious death of that same buffalo. This was no hijack.

What the troll did is the same as if we were discussing slavery. Would we allow someone to disrupt the thread to rudely argue over and over that slavery and the history of Black America are irrelevant because "I never owned a slave so what's the problem?"
