Obama Doubles Down On Immigration, Keystone Pipeline~On the Road with Aung San Kyl in Myanmar

"Speaking to reporters alongside famous opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Obama was adamant that, despite mounting GOP objections, he will move forward and take executive action to reform the immigration system by the end of the year because reforms are “way overdue.”

“I gave the House over a year to go ahead and at least give a vote to the Senate bill. They failed to do so and I indicated to Speaker Boehner several months ago that if, in fact, Congress failed to act, I would use all the lawful authority that I possess to try to make the system work better, and that's going to happen,” he said."

In some of his strongest language yet, Obama pushed back against the Republican argument that the pipeline is a “massive jobs bill for the United States.”

“Understand what this project is: It is providing the ability of Canada to pump their oil, send it through our land, down to the Gulf, where it will be sold everywhere else. It doesn't have an impact on US gas prices,” he said, growing visibly frustrated.

“If my Republican friends really want to focus on what's good for the American people in terms of job creation and lower energy costs, we should be engaging in a conversation about what are we doing to produce even more homegrown energy? I'm happy to have that conversation,” he continued.

Tribal activists staged a protest against the Keystone XL Pipeline during President Barack Obama's visit to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota in June

President Barack Obama said the Keystone XL Pipeline won't create as many jobs as supporters claim as the House prepares to vote today on a bill to approve the controversial project.

During his visit to Myanmar, Obama also said the pipeline won't lead to lower energy costs for Americans. At the same time, the White House stopped short of saying the president will veto the bill that Republicans are pushing.

President Obama is, once again, right on target.

XL pipeline is bad for the environment and will do very little for energy costs. Immigration reform is way overdue and needs to acted on NOW.

Yes, Republican heads are exploding everywhere.

We are very fortunate that this man is in office.

Post recommended to the max.

BTW, went out to happy hour after work with my very anti-XL friend and some younger 20 and early 30-something coworkers. Didn't expect political conversation but was pleasantly surprised that the younger set really wanted to talk about issues. The younger set was very anti-XL, feminist, Democrat and PRO-OBAMA! My friend gave them some anti-XL buttons they immediately put on. Fox news was on at the bar we met at and one of the youngest, Marcy, said, out of the blue, "Why does every place have Fox on? It is such bullshit!" The political discourse was on! Gave them the numbers to call to thank President Obama. Marcy's other great comment - "Fuck the midterms!"

In all, a very nice time and very refreshing. Cool to be with involved young people! Despite the midterms, WE ARE MOVING FORWARD!

We are not going back. Not on the environment, reproductive rights, gay rights, education, immigration, racism or economic equality. We can't and we won't.

Thank you, President Obama!!!!!!!

Thank you for giving out the numbers to call the White House and let them know how Vetoing on XL is a Good thing for our Environment.. especially since it wouldn't be providing that many jobs and doing nothing for our "gas prices".

been under review for awhile now and the repubs and some dems are trying to fast track it and he's saying "No fast-tracking". I do like his strong language against it now.. they must be seething in DC

This is from Jan 2012

"While Obama will certainly continue to face criticism, environmentalists and many Democrats cheered the decision.

"The knock on Barack Obama from many quarters has been that he's too conciliatory," said Bill McKibben, who heads the anti-pipeline group 350.com. "But here, in the face of a naked political threat from Big Oil to exact huge political consequences, he's stood up strong."

From 350.com yesterday..

November 13, 2014

KXL Veto a Strong Move

"In response to news reports that President Obama will veto any Congressional legislation forcing approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, 350.org Executive Director May Boeve issued the following statement:

“It’s good to see the White House drawing a line in the sand on Keystone, and standing up for our climate. President Obama is right to veto politically-driven legislation that undermines the State Department’s independent review process, and increases our reliance on fossil fuels. We’ll continue to support President Obama to stand up to Big Oil and reject Keystone XL once and for all.”

http://350.org/press-release/kxl-veto-a-strong-move/

I like this Bill McKibben and 350.. very respectful..

He's always been for Immigration Reform and has given the House time to get it done but they won't so now he's going to use all the power that he's allowed to keep those families together.
