Secret Service scandal raises question of macho culture, women agents
The scandal over allegations that Secret Service agents brought prostitutes to their hotel rooms in Colombia ahead of a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama keeps growing. And with it come awkward questions about whether a strong macho element in the culture of the U.S. Secret Service could pose a threat to security, and how women agents fit into the picture.
Journalist and commentator Kiri Blakeley asked in a blog post Tuesday why there are not more female Secret Service agents to counter this kind of bad behavior.
"The reason there should be more is simple: Women don't get into trouble the way men do," she wrote.
"Seriously, can you imagine a bunch of Secret Service gals going on a trip to Colombia, where they are scheduled to secure the environment for their boss, who happens to be, oh, the most powerful man in the world, and then hiring a bunch of call guys?" she asks.
The identities of the 11 Secret Service agents implicated in the investigation have not been disclosed, nor have those of as many as 10 U.S. military personnel also suspected of involvement. But it is widely assumed they are all men.

Women are also better suited than their male counterparts to do some things, Robinson said, such as accompanying the first lady if she makes a restroom stop.

"Girls night out" can get boozy and raunchy. It rarely achieves the sheer ugliness of the Tailhook Convention or the mess in Colombia.

(37,182 posts)I made an ironic post about women being immune to acting on sexual impulses.
No, most women are not as sexually driven as most men. However, that does not mean that they aren't impulsive sexually.

(37,182 posts)And you want to argue with me over your mis-interpretation.
The original article in the post made a generalization that women SS agents would not engage in this kind of sexually risky behavior, and I made the point that it's simply not true. Women do engage in sexually, impulsive risky behaviors as well.
One's gender does not dictate one's action.

Far more men view porn than women.
Far more men rape others than women.
Men are more likely to have an affair than women.
If biology is not a major factor in those choices, please explain what is.
Yavin4
(37,182 posts)And, I conceded the point that most men have a stronger sex drive than most women. Not arguing that point.
What I am arguing is the presumption that women DO NOT engage in impulsive, risky sexual encounters. That's simply not true. Do I need to post the recent case of the Bengals Cheerleader/Teacher that had an inappropriate relationship with a student?
There are also stories of women who vacation to the Caribbean to pick up local men.
Sorry, but just saying that only men engage in these kinds of things is a gross generalization, and inaccurate.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)And porn? Really, very few guys watch porn, and the ones that do only do it because they've been programmed by the space patriarchy to be turned on by images of naked women. It's certainly not biological.

Poor men. They're being persecuted. I mean, we don't even know if the secret service agents were men. They all could be women.
One thing is sure, they put the president's life at risk. Everyone involved should be fired and barred from any sort of law enforcement position.

"Seriously, can you imagine a bunch of Secret Service gals going on a trip to Colombia, where they are scheduled to secure the environment for their boss, who happens to be, oh, the most powerful man in the world, and then hiring a bunch of call guys?" she asks.
did she say women NEVER get into trouble or make mistakes? NO.
did she say women are perfect? NO.
did she say there should only be women SS agents? NO.
so untwist your knickers. prove her wrong, if you can.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)but lest anyone think that there is an excessive amount of hysterical pearl-clutching going on, I'd like to ask what EXACTLY sort of "trouble" there was. Did the hooker situation directly interfere with anyone's ability to do their jobs?
Oh, I know we're mad mad MADDDD!
about it, but aside from causing scandalous heavens-to-betsy outrage, what was the PRECISE real-world impact of the behavior on the job performance, if any?
JI7
(93,615 posts)which can put the president and whoever the secret service is protecting at risk.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Still, there's no evidence that anything like that happened. A lot of things COULD happen.
For instance, agents could also become involved with non "hooker" spies or otherwise people pretending to be something other than what they are. If an agent is going to compromise information to a sex partner, what evidence is there that they're more likely to compromise information to a sex partner they're paying for a one night stand, as opposed to one they met "legitimately" and are involved in a "genuine" relationship with?
Maybe the answer is to have the president guarded by Priests? Eunuchs?
I mean, since we're already off in hypothetical land.

Now I'm not saying all women are baby-crazy or suffering from raging PMS. Obviously, there are few who can suck it up and ignore their many biological faults enough to do the job.
But in general the failings of women as a gender makes them less suited to be SS agents than men.
Also what if there's jar opening or parallel parking in the job description?
/apparently it's ok to use blatant gender stereotypes so long as you say it doesn't apply to *every* member of that gender.

(13,390 posts)Women are more likely to follow rules and generally less inclined to take such risks. It has biological and social roots.
more likely clearly does not presume all or never.
You have to consider that the rules are different for men and women in the first place.
Things that were considered rebellious for women for most of the 20th century:
Getting an education
Participating in sports. Particularly those involving physical risk.
Working
Not marrying
Divorce
Not having children
Trying to own property, have credit under her name, etc.
And of course, sex before marriage
Many people are still not ready to accept women in male dominated professions.
All of the above, have been pretty much always accepted for men either under male entitlement or "boys will be boys" permission. The assumptions that drove those mores are still present in American culture and some of those behaviors are still considered rebellious for women by some.
Men and women both do it, but they do it differently. Mostly because what qualifies as rebellion is different for men and women. When men rebel it is often much more extreme because they have to go farther to break rules.
