(15,435 posts)Can't say I have all that much hope. I'm on his list to receive information, but he's the type to lean DLC. But Bob Graham was instrumental on Amendment 1 here in FL so perhaps he had some input. Graham has always been concerned about the environment. I DO worry what is going to happen with off-shore drilling now that "somehow" the alien got re-elected!
Still not able to accept or wrap my head around the election. But this is Florida and who knows what really went on. So many theories running rampant, but I put NOTHING past the Repukes. But also think State Democratic Party here is almost useless too!
Cha

it would need to go back to committee -- reworked, redefined rewritten.
Then brought up in the house and then the senate -- do you really believe this is a logistic reality? (I am not being sarcastic. it is a real question)
I personally don't think they will revisit this, not with gas prices falling the way they are. I also don;t think they will revisit this one because the only reason why they thought it ws worth it was for the flare of the Mary Landruie circus.

So in 2015, Republicans will have 54 senators plus today's 9 pro-Keystone Dems. Enough to overcome a filibuster, but not an Obama veto.

Hope it's true!
Raine1967
(11,589 posts)I think this is true, Obama would veto, but ffs, They have a billion Obamacare votes to worry about!!!
I really don't see this as a top issue GOP concern, they would have tried to push this thru a LONG time ago. They didn't until ms. Mary wanted a vote.
it's a fake wedge issue.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)The Rs will put it up for a vote again in Jan, imo, and make Big Bad Obama veto it.
Raine1967
(11,589 posts)Still feeling like this is a wedge issue.
Obama will veto it, if it really comes to that. In the meantime, the GOP is going to be distracted with immigration, and the ACA.
With the saudi's making sure gas prices are falling here in the USA, I kinda have a feeling keystone is going to drop off the list of hair on fire must do BS from the GOP.
People who have been told (falsely) that we need the pipeline to lower gas prices are seeing prices drop without the pipeline.

(3,919 posts)what is more important than a clean water table and the life of all living things on the planet? the safety and health of the water table, americans, and quality of life for all living things will be jeopardized when toxins from just one major oil spill begins to affect the food chain. we have yet to experience the full effects of the gulf oil spill - and we may not - but, our children and all living things will until the end of the planet. it is irreversible.

hopemountain
(3,919 posts)are you actively and progressively SUPPORTING efforts to stop the pipeline? i.e. letting your legislators and others know that you do not want the pipeline?
i did not misread your comment. rather, i clearly read between the lines.
totodeinhere
(13,057 posts)the GOP will pass a pipeline bill in January and some pundits believe that Obama will eventually sign that bill. In my original comment I took no position on the pipeline itself.
hopemountain
(3,919 posts)and, it is not a "fact" the bill will pass in january. yet. president obama will not risk the toxic spills on our soil for canadian oil that will be sold to china and the rest of the international market for a measly 50 or so permanent jobs. not now - he has already placated the gop enough. it got him nothing and america, less. he has a couple of years left and he is going to do what he said he was elected to do. fuck the pundits - all clamoring for their 1 second of fame saying whatever ridiculous made up lies they can make up while the cameras and the mics are on them.
MiniMe
(21,709 posts)I think it is at least 50 times, and to this point the Senate hasn't voted on it, but they keep trying. They don't have to rework the bill, the house will just take a vote on the same bill and send it to the Senate again and it will probably clear cloture because of the new makeup of the Senate. Then the President will hopefully veto it, and they don't have enough votes to overturn a veto right now. Repealing the ACA will be the other vote they will take quickly, and it will pass the house again, not sure if they have enough votes to clear cloture in the Senate but I think if they tack it on to a budget bill, it doesn't have to pass cloture. Remember, everything changes once the new congress gets sworn in.

Karma, baby. May the laws of cause and effect rain upon them and soon.
Living in Montana and having as many NA friends as I do, and being a supporter of the environment, I am really upset at the direction these cads are corralling us to. To me it seems a lot like the wild bison issue that has been raging on and on in my neighborhood... and we who care about the environment, not just for ourselves but all life forms including those people who hate us, are the bison.
Very thoughtful OP, thanks for posting it.
Cha
(296,878 posts)Environment up there in Montana with the wild bison..
2naSalit
(86,345 posts)once the environment is trashed up here, there's little left to save elsewhere. Much of the water source for a big chunk of the US comes from here, and so does a lot of carbon transfer from the forests, and the wild animal population is a part of all that. If we let this all go to ruin, it's game over for many species, including our own.
There was once a radical author, Burroughs, who said of our species, "Humans are the only species on the planet who willfully pollute/poison their own bodies..." (paraphrasing but pretty close to the quote I heard years ago.) We need to clean up our act and a lot of that means how we use the natural world - I don't like the term resources.
I know there are lots of people who care but it needs to be accompanied by action. This one vote is a tiny band-aid on a very large problem. I hope that there will be some movement in that concern and soon.
Anyway, I do appreciate your thoughtful posts, I don't always comment but I do rec a lot of them!

to Say NO..No, thank you to Keystone..
I'll just post what the President has to say about this pipeline hogwash..
Obama on XLKeystone..
snip//
In some of his strongest language yet, Obama pushed back against the Republican argument that the pipeline is a massive jobs bill for the United States.
Understand what this project is: It is providing the ability of Canada to pump their oil, send it through our land, down to the Gulf, where it will be sold everywhere else. It doesn't have an impact on US gas prices, he said, growing visibly frustrated.
If my Republican friends really want to focus on what's good for the American people in terms of job creation and lower energy costs, we should be engaging in a conversation about what are we doing to produce even more homegrown energy? I'm happy to have that conversation, he continued.
MOre..
http://abcnews.go.com/US/obama-doubles-immigration-keystone-pipeline/story?id=26905484
snip//
President Barack Obama said the Keystone XL Pipeline won't create as many jobs as supporters claim as the House prepares to vote today on a bill to approve the controversial project.
During his visit to Myanmar, Obama also said the pipeline won't lead to lower energy costs for Americans. At the same time, the White House stopped short of saying the president will veto the bill that Republicans are pushing.

Yeah, way too bad about Michael Bennet.. is there any chance Dems in Colorado can get him to change his mind for the next vote?

(30,481 posts)Last week there was an op where a member wanted Nelsen primaried. Seriously. They weren't looking for the best person to remove Rubio, who is not on the same cycle as Nelson, they just wanted the Nelson gone.

(165 posts)The American people are tired of the failed law makers in DC. The GOP only mission is to destroy. Take the nation and people back 100 years.

(95,337 posts)In the end I'll vote for Carper if he's the dem on the ballot in the general election but I'd love for more progressive Dem to take a run against him. Chris Coons has shown us that Progressives can easily win the Delaware, I'd love to have a 2nd one.

(95,337 posts)I won't help campaign for him because of that but if he's on the ballot in November I'll still vote for him because he's better than any republican alternative.
But rumor has it he might be retiring soon so hopefully we can get someone better in there. I would think Beau Biden might run but Beau wants to be Governor not Senator, which I thought was an interesting choice.

(13,616 posts)There is a silver lining, in that the GOP will be forced to wrap their ugly little claws all over this and own it, especially when, not if, when it becomes a disaster.
Cha
(296,878 posts)other way.. but we know now that there are Dems in the Senate who represent the People and the Environment! Who don't believe the Keystone Lies.
No small feat!

(32,324 posts)Rgardless of their party, good to know there are some honorable people in that den of thieves.
And I hope that former elected officals like Ed Rendell feel a sharp twinge of shame, that they sold their constituents out, time after time, for the sake of lining their pockets with Big Energy rewards.
