Moreover, "secular" individuals, groups and governments never committed atrocities or instituted tyrannies in ancient or modern times?
Who knew? Stalin, Mao, Hitler, etc. were all obviously under the thrall of Abrahamic religion. I knew all those Marxist revolutionaries were really undercover observant and religious monotheists. I was a history major in college (and it certainly feels like I graduated in 1200 B.C.), and I'm surprised that so many scholars, both left and right, could be so misinformed.
There is certainly much to be criticized about certain religious dogma, both Abrahamic and otherwise, ancient and modern, but the human ability to be self-destructive and cruel is also quite prevalent among the non-religious, to say nothing of many of the great and wonderful advances by those with who held religious beliefs.

Why are we putting up with the same old BS all over gain?
Why not look to the root cause and find out who is funding all this?
We've seen this movie before. This is a reboot designed to get us to spill more blood and treasure into the sand.

(18,184 posts)What do we know about the event that kicked off these trillion dollar wars we've been fighting?
We didn't even get the full 9/11 report which included details on who funded and facilitated it.
We haven't had the CIA torture report.
And the Iraq Inquiry report hasn't been released.
We're running blind and ignorant of the facts.
And now we're on the verge of being sucked back into a possibly even bigger and more vicious war.

(25,699 posts)I imagine French Muslims who decided to throw in with IS are probably pretty aware of the relevant history on the subject.

(18,184 posts)Most of them are petty criminals and ex-drug addicts etc.
I don't know how much second and third generation French North African teenagers and young guys talk about Sykes-Picot but I doubt it's something they talked about until recently.
I think they more likely just want an excuse to live out their fantasies of adventure. I don't think they were that educated about Middle Eastern politics, culture or history until they heard about it in the propaganda videos.
However, I could be completely wrong. I don't know any French North African teenagers. I just wonder how much we know about these guys and the people behind them.

(29,322 posts)Their use of social networking also helps. But they do better recruiting from France & Britain then most other Muslim majority countries so I think the Islamaphobia is key to helping the social media propaganda campagin.
I have no idea their criminal background, if they're ex-drug addicts they probably won't want to start using again since ISIS will execute them.
CJCRANE
(18,184 posts)and we've talked honestly about politics and all sorts of things but they've never talked about Sykes-Picot even though the Kurds probably came out the worst from that arrangement. More recent events have a much bigger relevance.
I think it's more likely to be a useful meme being used by outside forces.

There is a lot of other factors at play as well such as our bombs creating generations of haters.

(18,184 posts)Many of these guys were petty criminals and gullible teenagers who didn't know much about Islam or history until they were recruited and indoctrinated.

(29,322 posts)This Al-Baghdadi dude got most of his initial recruits there and being held without being able to use habeas corpus to challenge your detention builds a lot of anger that is great for recruiting.
They receive funding from several sources, the biggest one is Qatar (they're basically the opposite of US foreign policy) who also backed the rebels in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, and other places. They also make money from dealing oil in the black market.

(35,956 posts)...are folk that don't like Muslims? There's no such thing as a peaceful religion, so apart from being one of those lame RW one-liners, it's pretty stupid...
Also, the OP was intentionally misleading and in the subject line tried to make out that this is a view held by the French Muslim community rather than 3 extremists. Why is it okay to judge an entire community, ethnicity or religion based on the views of the most extreme?
