Watching CNN and it looks like a store has been set on fire.

(9,951 posts)is this true? If so, kudos to the protesters.

(9,951 posts)God bless those that are trying to keep this peaceful and shame on those, police and agitators, who would sully the name of Michael Brown and his family.

(4,959 posts)from a couple people who started trying to smash windows. It was definitely protestors trying to stop the provocateurs or whatever they were.

(6,228 posts)Now, will you answer my question?
Depaysement
(1,835 posts)I understand the rage. A man died after being rudely accosted by a police officer because he was jaywalking while black.
I will agree that the state should prosecute the protesters who commit crimes if it gives the same regard to those protesters that it gave to Officer Wilson, presenting ALL the evidence to the Grand Jury, not asking for specific charges, spending enormous resources on forensics and numerous witness interviews.
It's called equal protection under law and it is enshrined in the Constitution. The State should follow its own rules.

That's not what I wrote.

(1,488 posts)Direct inference is that the protesters are blameless until something happens that is entirely outside of their control and also incredibly subjective...
How is that not what you said?
Depaysement
(1,835 posts)Get justice for a guy killed because he was walking in the road while black and it can prosecute the protesters who committed crimes. The State has no legitimacy if it doesn't mete out equal protection under the law. Here it surely didn't.
Or maybe you think the authorities did exactly what they should have done.

(18,115 posts)The state is a direct cause of these riots. No one is absolved from their individual actions. But, the state asked for this, set it up and created it.
This is the culmination of oppression and injustice and police militarization. The state is a cause, but that is not the same as saying they are solely responsible. This is complicated and nuanced stuff. Good luck.

(6,228 posts)I don't think the vast vast vast majority of people can't be manipulated into committing crimes.

(18,115 posts)The state declared a state of emergency before anything happened. They brought in the National Guard. The boxed the people in. They lined up like a military marching to war. They asked for it, they got it.

(7,720 posts)that looters broke into a store (a woman's clothing store?) and then a group of protesters linked arms in front of the store to stop more looting. I wish there were more actions like this.
So far, it appears the protestes in other cities are calm.
