(297,155 posts)I'm just outraged by how wrong it is that a 7 yr. old is so touched by this ugliness.
My feeling after hearing the decision was exactly the opposite of how I felt the night pres. Obama was elected in 2008. I was elated and it felt like a brighter world. Tonight, I am deflated and I have a feeling like I am looking at the world through a filter intended to turn the world ugly.

On Monday, Attorney General Eric Holder released a statement following the Ferguson grand jurys decision not to indict police office Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown. Holder said that the Justice Departments investigation into Browns death will continue.
While the grand jury proceeding in St. Louis County has concluded, the Justice Departments investigation into the shooting of Michael Brown remains ongoing. Though we have shared information with local prosecutors during the course of our investigation, the federal inquiry has been independent of the local one from the start, and remains so now. Even at this mature stage of the investigation, we have avoided prejudging any of the evidence. And although federal civil rights law imposes a high legal bar in these types of cases, we have resisted forming premature conclusions.
Michael Browns death was a tragedy. This incident has sparked a national conversation about the need to ensure confidence between law enforcement and the communities they protect and serve. While constructive efforts are underway in Ferguson and communities nationwide, far more must be done to create enduring trust. The Department will continue to work with law enforcement, civil rights, faith and community leaders across the country to foster effective relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve and to improve fairness in the criminal justice system overall. In addition, the Department continues to investigate allegations of unconstitutional policing patterns or practices by the Ferguson Police Department.
Though there will be disagreement with the grand jurys decision not to indict, this feeling should not lead to violence. Those who decide to participate in demonstrations should remember the wishes of Michael Browns parents, who have asked that remembrances of their son be conducted peacefully. It does not honor his memory to engage in violence or looting. In the coming days, it will likewise be important for local law enforcement authorities to respect the rights of demonstrators, and deescalate tensions by avoiding excessive displaysand usesof force, Holder said.

(15,237 posts)The first man killed in the Revolutionary War. It is unclear if he was a free man or runaway slave. The British militia were defended by no less than John Adams who described the unarmed Revolutionary crowd as; "a motley rabble of saucy boys, negros and molattoes, Irish teagues and outlandish jack tarrs.". In later years John's cousin Samuel Adams named the incident the Boston Massacre. For some reason when I remember this it invokes Ferguson MO.

It didn't matter that Ferguson, Mo., was 2,000 miles away. When Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot unarmed black teenager Mike Brown in August, hundreds of Portlanders protested.
They marched to the Portland Police Bureau's North Precinct. They drew chalk outlines to represent African Americans killed by police.
"Aaron Campbell, James Jahar Perez, Keaton Otis," one protester said. "Everybody here was somebody. They were someone. And now they're gone."

(30,099 posts)Activists plan to protest grand jury decision with economic boycott on major US shopping weekend.
Black consumers plan to protest with their wallets over what they say is a failure of justice in Ferguson, Missouri. On Monday, a grand jury decided not to indict police officer Darren Wilson on any charges in the August 9 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager.
The Justice for Michael Brown Leadership Coalition is calling for a national boycott of Black Friday, a major US shopping holiday that follows Thanksgiving, and throughout the weekend. Organiser Dacia Polk told St. Louis radio, "Until this nation begins to place value on black lives, there will be no value placed on this business because black lives matter.
Boycott advocates hope they can harness African Americans' collective purchasing power, an estimated one trillion dollars. Organisers also plan to walk through malls in silent protest.
Boycott supporters tweeted using #BoycottBlackFriday , #BrownFriday , and #HandsUpDontSpend , a reference to the "hands up don't shoot" chant from many Ferguson protests.

(Kristin Lems)
January 19, 2005
words and music by Kristin Lems c 2005
This song is dedicated to the families of two black college students slain at Jackson State University, one week after the slaying of four white students at Kent State university in 1970. Written in 1975, the song is an early attempt to address the many double standards of racism.
1. When our towns were in flame and yet we got the blame I wasn't surprised When police stormed the streets and no one came to our needs I wasn't surprised
Well it wasn't our last and it wasn't our first My people are killed even right in our church And maybe I'm wise from too many cries But I wasn't surprised.
2. When they shot Fred and Mark as they slept in the dark, I wasn't surprised When the commission contends it was in "self defense," I wasn't surprised Well it wasn't our last and it wasn't our first My people are killed in their sleep, in the church And maybe I'm wise from hearing his cries, But I wasn't surprised.
3. In a Southern jail cell, a guard gave a girl hell, and I wasn't surprised She fought back and defied, became an outlaw statewide And I wasn't surprised Well it wasn't our last and it wasn't our first My people are killed in the prisons and church And maybe I'm wise from too many cries But I wasn't surprised.
4. Well right down the block, a young boy picked a lock And I wasn't surprised The police shot him dead, he was hungry, how he bled! I wasn't surprised It wasn't our last and it wasn't our first My people are killed down the block, in the church And maybe I'm wise from hearing his cries But I wasn't surprised.
5. When they shot down my son, nothing wrong had he done I wasn't surprised He was walking to class 'cross the Jackson State grass And I wasn't surprised Well it wasn't our first and it wasn't our last My family is killed even crossing the grass And maybe I'm wise from hearing his cries But I wasn't surprised.
6. I've seen your children fall and I grieve for you all, But I wasn't surprised. I have known all along that they're mean and they're strong, So don't be surprised Well it wasn't your last, it was only your first - The day will come round that they'll kill you in church And maybe I'm wise from too many lies But I wasn't surprised.
7. Well I'm bitter as hell, but one thing I'll tell you. You might be surprised. If we stand side by side to stop this genocide They will be surprised. For as long as we're silent, as long as we're still They'll gun us and shun us, you know that they will! So raise your voices high in one unified cry And we'll see who's surprised!
