1 turkey leg has 1100 calories and 44 grams of heart killing animal saturated fat.

Wonder why so many feel the need to take a nap after that meal?

I went for a 5 mile jog after pigging out on organic fruit on thanksgiving.

Food that makes you sleepy is heart killing food that is killing you.

Food should NEVER make you tired. It should energize you.

Aware of the slaughterhouse conditions where these often sick animals are butchered?

I ignored the lattice weaving and just entirely covered the entire exposed surface of the bird (after seasoning the skin to taste) and removed the bacon after the first two hours. The bacon was cooked without being overdone and the skin browned and crisped perfectly during the rest of the bake.

Now I had a beautiful bird and prepped bacon for turkey club sandwiches from the leftovers. Also the pan drippings for the gravy were enhanced by the bacon grease rendered during cooking.

As to the pan drippings, there is one more thing I tried and liked-I now use about 1 1/2-2 cups of fresh apple cider as a liquid base in the pan and between the cider, drippings, and bacon fat I had the finest gravy I've ever made.

YMMV Best of luck...

I think I learned it at age 15, a take on chicken cordon bleu.

A breast, flattened, sour cream and chopped green onions for filling, and three strips of bacon laid out in a star.
Place breast on star, cream filling in the middle, form it into a ball with the bacon straps coming together at a toothpick in the top and bake til done.
The juices are to die for!

Pound chicken tenders to flatten them, season with salt and pepper or your favorite seasoning (or brush with bbq sauce), place a cube of pepper jack cheese on top. Wrap chicken around cheese, wrap bacon slice around chicken to complete cover the cheese and secure with a toothpick or skewer. Grill until the bacon is browned and crispy. You can brush with more sauce if you wish. These are quite a hit every time they are served.

ever seen these parasites in raw pork? There eggs aren't killed by the cooking process btw.

Ever seen the conditions at the slaughterhouse where you get your meat, or where your grocer gets there meat from?

Sick animal get processed along with the rest. Animals crammed into pens spreading disease and parasites to one another.

Part of why I gave up meat. And awoke to vitality. Something my former meat diet had robbed.

One of my SO's best friends is a militant vegan and continually posts stuff on Facebook outright lying about human diet (they claim humans are not natural omnivores but frugovores) and comparing meat eating to the holocaust. I am partly Roma (gypsy). You can imagine my reaction.

I can also remember posting about a new method of vat-growing meat. I forget the details now but essentially, it grew meat in a tank by basically cloning it. First response from vegans: You still shouldn't eat meat, even through teh animal has been completely removed from the process.

That's something I've speculated about for years now, wondering if the technology would be developed, and more importantly, become efficient enough with resources and energy to be worthwhile.

There'd be no suffering of animals, no need to waste caloric energy on bones and organs that won't be consumed. Sanitary conditions could probably be maintained without lots of antibiotics. Slash-and-burn for creating cattle raising land and the methane output from cows could both be greatly reduced.

I imagine, of course, there'd be a lot of cultural resistance at first, especially because vat-grown meat isn't "natural".

Given that it's highly unlikely, however, (in spite much energetic vegan preaching) that humans will ever give up eating meat, and a fair amount of it, I'd hope that healthy cultured meats (as measured by actual research data, not by preconceived notions) that were economically priced would eventually win people over.

The link is to a story about the prototype of such technologies. Future improvements would create cells by essentially cloning tissue rather than taking them from a living animal. And naturally, teh taste has to be fine-tuned. But it's an incredibly promising development and one I'd personally take part in (I have precisely zero "it's not natural" reservations). This wa just the first link I could find with a moment's Googling though, there's loads more out there.

Everyone in the United States is free to do as they please and that is why we are the United States of America. If you want to eat anything you want, I applaud it. I eat meat everyday and manage to stay healthy. It is probably because I add vegetables to my diet as well and keep carbs and sugar down. I have steak at least once a week. A ham sandwich everyday for lunch (at work). On weekends, it might be a burger from McD's or some other place. I have really good cholesterol and blood pressure is a tad low but not too bad. I think it depends on the individual. But I have NEVER told anyone what to eat and never will. As far as health costs, again we pay for our health care insurance so what is the big deal? I don't get subsidies and don't expect to ever have them. I pay my fair share and for others to have health care too....I think it is great to have choices.

5. Who eats a whole turkey leg? Even a vegetarian could feel sleepy midday
Tue Dec 2, 2014, 08:46 PM
Dec 2014

if he grossly over-ate.

And tryptophan, the ingredient that is thought to make people sleepy, is an essential amino acid. Even vegetarians must get it in their diet. And do.

Also, vegetarians as just as capable as meat-eaters of choosing their foods badly. An overdose of starchy carbs and sugars isn't good for anyone.

http://www.med-health.net/Foods-High-In-Tryptophan.html

Foods High in Tryptophan

Amino acids help to create proteins that aid in neurotransmission messages to and from the brain. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that plays a vital role in this process. Tryptophan is a precursor of 5-HTP or serotonin which is acquired from dietary sources. Tryptophan combines with vitamin B6, transforming into serotonin and niacin in the liver. This helps to improve blood circulation, enhance memory and lower cholesterol, making tryptophan an essential amino acid to improve your overall health.

Foods High in Tryptophan
It is generally recommended that healthy adults consume 3.5-6mg of L-tryptophan for every kilogram of body weight throughout the day but there is a variance of how much a specific individual will require. Include a variety of sources of L-tryptophan in your diet to avoid a potential deficiency of this nutrient that can lead to liver damage or inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders which will limit your ability to absorb the nutrient properly. This may lead to complications.

Listed below are foods known to be high in tryptophan:

It has certainly not been debunked by the Mayo Clinic. To wit:

"Harmful dietary fat

"There are two main types of potentially harmful dietary fat — fat that is mostly saturated and fat that contains trans fat:

Saturated fat. This is a type of fat that comes mainly from animal sources of food, such as red meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products. Saturated fat raises total blood cholesterol levels and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, which can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Saturated fat may also increase your risk of type 2 diabetes.

... has been pretty solidly debunked. In fact, many researchers now believe that saturated fats are the healthiest.

Where did the idea that they are not healthy come from? Apparently, the vegetable oils industry. One thing everyone agrees on, trans fats and hydrogenated oils are the worst oils you can eat. Vegetable oils.

My health has improved remarkably in the last year as a result. My BP is down 30 points, CRP (an inflammatory marker) had dropped by half, my weight is down 50 lb, no edema in my legs and feet, GERD is gone...

What was killing me was carbohydrates because I have metabolic syndrome. Plus my milk allergy from childhood appears to have lingered, so when I cut out milk and most cheese I improved even further.

The thing is, everyone is so eager to have an ideology to cling to that they tend to forget/ignore the fact that food tolerances are very individual. That applies to a lot of the paleos I've talked with, as well as the vegans.

There is no "one size fits all" diet. When people ask me what my diet is, I usually say, "It's one that's right for me."

Tue Dec 2, 2014, 10:49 PM
Dec 2014

nothing else feeds the immune system like the nutrition from a well-researched vegan diet.

I'm NOT implying that veganism is a cure for HIV.

My HIV treatment approach, closely monitored by one of this planet's top HIV specialists, relies heavily on the strength of my immune system.

My doc is conducting a study on diet vs HIV. I am among this study because I am med-free. My body has almost eradicated the presence of HIV. HIV is nearly undetectable and my next labs in 60 days, I'm hoping it will be undetectable.

Google the word "polysaccharide"

There's the first key to a healthy immune system, only found in plants.

The other key..
google "glutathione"

Veganism pumps up the production of this vitamin C activator in the body.

It's now being researched, that the level of glutathione in the human body might be the key to human longevity.

Without my healthy diet, my HIV would progress as my doc has seen happen in the past.

Edit: If I ever do need to go on HIV meds, I surely would. But they are costly, toxic, with side effects etc.

1st and foremost would be how long have you been HIV+? (and no, I don't think I am prying since you opened yourself up to be asked the question).

I will tell you who mine is because I am damn proud of who he is and the work he has done and he would not want his name to be kept secret. He happens to be Dr. Jeffery Beal and you can read all about him here http://mhlp.fmhi.usf.edu/facultyStaff/pfocus.cfm?focusid=164

From what I have seen what you have said with things pertaining to HIV in this thread, I find reckless and dangerous and you should be ashamed of yourself for spouting off on a subject that I think you don't know what you are talking about.

This goes to vegans or meat eaters alike, do not, I repeat, do not take advice from a unknown on the internet, instead seek advice from a medical professional.

First off, a nap after a big meal is a pleasure. That's only one of the many reasons people have feasts.

Many foods can make you sleepy, including oatmeal and almonds.

FROM HERE
It may be a favorite for breakfast, but you might want to pair a bowl of oatmeal with some coffee to make it through the day. "Grains in oatmeal trigger insulin production much like whole-grain bread," says Cynthia Pasquella, CCN, CHLC, CWC. "They raise your blood sugar naturally and make you feel sleepy. Oats are also rich in melatonin, which relaxes the body and helps you fall asleep."

For meateaters, bird protein offers an advantageous win-loss ratio when it comes to caloric and protein density. There are many ways to cook birds, including methods that reduce fat. We butterflied our turkey this year, soaked it in a brandy marinade, and grilled it on my charcoal grill. It was an awesome feast, which we enjoyed through three days of leftovers.

As for the treatment of turkeys, you are right. It's awful. I will try to purchase a heritage turkey next year.

2) Even if that were true, the fact that the fats came from animals would be irrelevant. Animal fats are not poison that will kill you just for eating them.
3) The idea that food shouldn't make you tired is just a lie on your part. The fact is that overeating on anything, even vegan nut cutlets, will make you tired because your body is diverting energy to digest the meal.
4) Slaughterhouse conditions here in the UK are strictly controlled and butchering sick animals is illegal.

Coexist. Live and let live and spend your time making an actual difference in the activism of your choice. It pains me to say that, but it really isn't worth it. Read the responses a couple times, and you'll see that as well. This isn't the place it used to be.

Sorry DU, but if the truth hurts, so be it.

I hope you'll get really specific in your response.

1100 calories for a turkey leg????????? Was asked by a few DUers to provide proof, but nothing......

Cured HIV and diabetes????? That is dangerous in my opinion.

I understand you want to stick up for the poster and that is fine, but you gotta admit some of the facts are rather outside the box.

Is that specific enough?

I'd leave out "like so many vegans do" because that is very wrong. I know few vegans who proselytize, but this OP and subsequent replies by the OP are not the way to attempt positive dietary changes.

There are ways to promote veganism that helps, but this is not an example of that.

I also have good numbers at my checkups.

raised on a local ranch - grass fed - lovingly birthed under the watchful eyes & with the caring hands of the ranch hand.

the leg was massaged with garlic, fresh rosemary and organic olive oil - accompanied with herbed middle eastern golden rice, steamed broccoli, tossed green salad, flat bread, & a yogurt, garlic, lemon & cilantro dipping sauce, red wine, and organic pumpkin pie with whipped cream. not one of us over ate - it was a little of this and a little of that.

everyone can eat what works for them. it is none of our business what others choose to eat. however, do hope they are informed and that the necessary information (not lies & made up misinformation) is available to make an informed decision about processed sugar, synthetic flavorings, and toxic genetically modified organisms in their food where their food comes from and how humanely and sustainably it is produced.

Then I went to a football game.

I've been vegan for twelve years and I like food.

"I went for a 5 mile jog after pigging out on organic fruit on thanksgiving." This sounds like a drag at best and borderline disordered behavior at worst. I have no idea how much fruit constitutes pigging out in your mind, but fruit is not a meal, and you probably need to eat more food generally and especially more fats from plant sources if that's your typical meal. That's not a balanced diet at all and you're not going to be able to keep that up.

Along with some nice potatoes, turnips, cranberry sauce and stuffing. Delicious balanced meal!

Enjoy your cardboard box or wood gristle, or whatever you eat.

A leg isn't even that fatty. Without eating the skin or smothering it in gravy, it is nowhere near 1,100 calories.

Now, here's an actual smoked turkey leg with the skin:

Calories
589

Fat
27.73g

But that wouldn't sound nearly as scary. Most people I know share a giant turkey leg with their group while walking.

for 98 years (well, he probably didn't eat them as a baby, but he always took the dark meat every year since I remember). He also eats salami, pastrami, beef, etc. It sure hasn't killed him yet--and 98 years is a pretty long time.

It sounds to me as if your restrictive diet makes you cranky and bitter towards others. Eat what you like, but (a) don't preach to others (because your rants aren't even true); and (b) don't expect to get invited to other people's Thanksgivings.

Well, big meals for me; don't like dark meat. I have to exercise some way because I don't like the feeling of being bloated and moving around helps it to go away.

When I used to cook Thanksgiving dinner, I always got up immediately putting things away and washing dishes. People would tell me to sit down and relax, but that just made me feel worse.

BTW, I do this all time; big meal or just salads for dinner.

than Animal protein, at least according to some doctors like Dr. Terry Mason in "Forks over Knives"

"If it walked, hopped, swam, crawled, had eyes and a mom and dad- don't eat it"

9 oz Tofu = ~33 Grams Plant Protein

The Institute of Medicine reports that protein RDAs, which are minimum protein requirements, are 56 grams for men, 46 grams for women
