<snip>
The Ford Motor Company is giving its Mustang a unique 50th birthday present: death.
Detroit will still market an automobile called the Mustang. It just won't bear much of a resemblance to the iconic roadster driven by the likes of Lt. Frank Bullitt and James Bond.

The Environmental Protection Agency may prefer Obamamobile Chevy Volts to the high-performance, low-mileage sports cars. But the American public exhibits a clear preference for the latter. Zero-to-sixty in five seconds just feels realer than global warming.
The classic American sports car survived the Pontiac Firebird, OPEC's oil embargo, and Ford's '70s-era Mustang II Pinto-like redesign. The Mustang won't survive Obama.

God forbid that the Mustang be made more fuel efficient. This dope thinks it is more important to go 0-60 in five seconds than get decent mileage as gas prices keep going up.
Not to mention that the modern Mustang is already a piece of crap.
I'm sick of these guys who wish that it was still 1970 and still listen to 'classic rock'.
He's the guy who tailgates me and gives me the finger and passes me in a no-passing zone.
Nobody likes that guy.

If it is still your primary music when you are tailgating me in your Mustang in 2012, may I suggest that you listen to a wider variety of music.
Just sayin'. No offense. I still crank up Golden earring in my Civic once in a while, going 5 mph over the speed limit and minding my own business.

(42,290 posts)Why does a car's name have to be synonymous with speed?
The car engineers and designers aren't in the business of making cars few will buy.
These So-called "Fast cars" have died every decade, along with the companies that produced them.
At least Obama saved THIS company from extinction.

(16,113 posts)Did you notice that your 3 "named" cars are all from american manufacturers and your three "numbered" cars were from European manufacturers?
You'd have a valid argument if Ford was making the "Ford asskicker" for the lower range market and the "Ford 2XPNSv4U" for the high end market, but otherwise you're mixing apples and oranges.

This article is more a swipe at the Obama administration than about Mustangs. I am sure he was one of those hoping that the whole car industry "dies", not just the mustangs.

(1,110 posts)But our Mustang is much more fuel efficient than our Explorer.
The only reason we bought the Explorer, is that I was frightened of all the idiots who threatened us because they thought we weren't driving the Mustang fast enough. The idiots in this area are pretty scary.
Why is everyone is such a hurry?
I will buy an itty-bitty fuel efficient car when the idiots also drive itty-bitty fuel efficient cars.
I don't even drive, but I am a frightened passenger, who doesn't want to be at the mercy of all the idiot drivers out there.

(45,851 posts)Smaller target for one thing and better handling overall in order to engage in evasive maneuvers.
The safest car is the one that does not collide with other vehicles, not the biggest/strongest.

(61,935 posts)Since 2008 both the 6 and 8 cylinder versions of the mustang have gained about 100 hp, with the v-6 going from 210 to 305 and the v-8 going from 300 to 412.

(9,975 posts)The new Mustang EcoBoost V-6 makes almost 300 hp (net - not the old, puffed-up gross ratings from the 60's), and gets 29 mpg.
Ford isn't dumping the Mustang anytime soon. Ford has been working at the "stratified charge" technology that underlies EcoBoost since the early 70's
A lot of people view cars of the 60's with great reverence, and attribute performance and refinement that most simply did not have.
I'm not one of them... I own a '72 F-350 with an old school, hot rod 302 - built similar to the Shelby Mustang small-blocks. Power is good (almost as much as the new V-6...) - but compared to the smooth-as-silk driveability of Ford's current EFI V-8's, it's rough as a cob.

(204 posts)New cars, including the Mustang are superior to the cars of old in every way. You can go to your local Ford dealer and buy a 400+ horsepower Mustang drive it off the lot and 2000 miles to a racetrack on the other side of the country, race it, and then drive it 2000 miles back home without ever doing anything but putting gas in it.
A 4,000 mile round trip in even the lowest horsepower Mustangs of the 60s and 70s would be an adventure best undertaken only by a very mechanically inclined driver.

(3,539 posts)I'm a liberal Democrat and I drive a 2006 Mustang GT. I'm hardly a speed demon. Any car will waste fuel if you have a heavy foot, even a Civic. The vast majority of us buy the Mustang because it is an iconic car that's fun to drive. Talk about painting with a broad brush.

(50,528 posts)If the Mustang could survive the two years Ford was making them out of Pintos, and the 14 years Ford was making them out of Fairmonts, it can survive anything.
