NYPD officers traveled to Ferguson, MO during the fallout of the grand jury decision for Michael Brown, the unarmed teen who was fatally shot by a police officer in August, to collect intelligence on professional agitators ahead of the Garner decision. Missouri protesters managed to outmaneuver police during protests by using disposable or burner phones and organizing via social media. One NYPD officer complained that the protesters were wealthy little techie brats who were using social media to outsmart cops.
The NYPD encourages cooperation across units to spy on people for attempting to protest, and any one who may be associated with protesters, Malkia Cyril, executive director of the Center for Media Justice, told ThinkProgress, mentioning the NYPD helicopters surveying thousands of protesters this week.
Police rely on social media and data collection to help them respond more efficiently to crime, but it can often step over the line. In Chicago, [there was the] creation of the heat map predicting who would do crime based on who they are and where they live. In New York, their anti-terrorism work has pushed the boundaries of privacy, Robinson said. But its all in how they use the data. At the end of the day, police need to build trust
And monitoring protests doesnt do this.

(3,732 posts)It's a sad day when people have to "outsmart the cops" in order to organize a protest. Geez louise.

(51,308 posts)You don't have to be that smart to outsmart cops.
I have a good friend who is a cop. Female, white, gay. She is a good cop. I know this.
Very good at her job. Can't imagine dealing with the things she has told me she has to deal with on a daily basis. She's pretty smart on a certain level.
But she's not the sharpest tool in the shed in regard to most of the knowledge those of us on DU take for granted...as something we know and understand.

If a cop doesn't turn other cops in, it's still called being an accessory.
Good cops are as common as Hen's Teeth.

(10,622 posts)to outsmart them, just average citizens that are simply aware of social media.
I wish they would stop recruiting cops from the moron and steroid crowd. Why not hire some smart people not loaded with 'roids that make them into perpetually angry (and still stupid) thugs.
Why is it again they choose to hire the stupidest people they can find? What is the reason to filter out anybody intelligent again?

(196 posts)High IQ types would be bored. You don't need high intelligence to be a good cop; just being a decent human being is enough.

(10,622 posts)I have my suspicions that "just being a decent human being" is screened out via psych profiles just as intelligence is screened out via I.Q. tests.
I disagree that stupid people can be good cops, you appear to think so, but cops require good judgement more than most, especially since they are so well armed and empowered to do whatever they want if the fiction in the report says the right things (reports that are never questioned I might add). Stupidity does not make for exceptional judgement in life or death decisions no matter what you may believe.

(10,622 posts)120 is pretty common and still well below my non-genius status, that or above seems minimal to expect good life or DEATH judgement.
I think we will simply have to agree to disagree, but I do feel the lack of intelligent life or death judgment commonly displayed in nearly every news cycle is both the proof and the blood pudding that supports my view.

(21,691 posts)An IQ of 123 and above is required for MENSA membership; are you suggesting that only those with IQs of 120 be recruited for police work? That's unrealistic; not only are those with those test scores not a large segment of the population from which to recruit, they're smart enough to turn down a crap job with crap pay.

(9,610 posts)132 is required for mensa. 123 just sounded way too low to me, so I had to check on it.
