An excerpt from an academic article (Cangemi and Pfhol, 2009).
In The Sociopath Next Door (Stout, 2005) and (Morse 2004; Babiak & Hare, 2006), it was stated about four percent of the United States population is sociopathic. Others have offered similar percentages. How accurate are these statistics? Cangemi and Pfohl, with over 70 years combined professional experience with scores of organizations in different cultures, and with exposure to thousands of leaders, staff personnel other associates and individuals-many on a confidential, one-on-one basis-believe this percentage may be higher.
These authors have observed first hand the workings of such individuals - especially their techniques, their callousness, their focused behavior, their desire to destroy a competitor, their delight in inflicting damage and pain on another, and their remorseless willingness to do whatever it takes (unethical, immoral, or illegal) to get what they want.

And a blog post from Linda Martinez-Lewi (Ph.d. and an expert in narcissistic personalities).
With the narcissistic style taking over much of our world today and becoming fully acceptableself absorption, obsession with appearance, being in the A list social circles, coldness and disdain for those outside of this magic bubbleit becomes easier for the sociopath to move in and out of business and social circles undetected as a dreadful human being. We have narcissistic sociopaths who run some of our prestigious corporations. We have some members of the branches of government who fit this definition. When you look at some of the dirty deal making that takes place, the rip-offs of those who are without power or money, and the pure greed involved you find that many in the corporate, entrepreneurial, entertainment, media and government that fit this definition. No one wants to talk about sociopaths in high places. Most people have a problem believing that a person with such prestige and power who is given the highest respect and deference and even lionized could be so predatory.
Their family members may not be aware of their levels of criminality. They have become so deluded and accustomed to leading privileged lives that they close their eyes to anything that disrupts the perfect insular world they have created. There are plenty of spouses and children of narcissistic sociopaths who will tell you horror stories about their private lives. Family members describe themselves as prisoners, unable to make their own decisions, forced to follow their parent(s) commands to the letter. They view ugly violent scenes between their parents that are re-enacted frequently and put them in a chronic state of anxiety and apprehension. Spouses who willfully stay married to these reprehensible individuals put the lives of their children in psychological and emotional jeopardy. If you are the spouse of one of these individuals and finally recognize all of the damage that has been done, wake up and prepare to sever these pathological relationships if not for yourself for your children.
Narcissism and sociopathy in its bloodless form are becoming more acceptable in the society at large. You dont notice many high level narcissists doing perp walks or losing court cases when they are clearly guilty or going out of business because they have been defrauding their business partners and clients for years.

Apologies for triggering any horrible memories; but this is an important topic, IMHO.

(45,274 posts)The problem with most research on psychopaths is that it really only looks at one type of psychopath, namely, the low-functioning, low-SES kind who repeatedly do really stupid, criminal, awful things and end up spending a lot of time in prison.
The standard measurement device for the condition, the Hare Psychopathy Checklist (Revised; PCL-R) has a lot of items about criminal history, etc. Smart little psychopaths, particularly if they are sheltered from the harshness of the justice system by the affluence of their parents, don't get caught for petty shit. They don't score very high on the PCL-R. And more than anything else, the rich seem not to want to be studied. They don't consent to interviews. Their foundations don't fund research into the psychological makeup of the Dick Cheneys, Ken Lays and Duke Cunninghams of the world.

(67,112 posts)admire as a strong beneficial character trait. The guy that can make the hard calls. (That is, the strong sociopathic calls.) Destroying thousands of lives often because of the respective CEO and their herd's failures in the upper echelon in business. Then, they take their golden parachutes and coast on to do the same yet again, and admired again. It's often a fucken sociopathic racket. Politicians are often much the same. And many of the little people ogle at them as strong leaders.

(75,480 posts)blend in so well with the mainstream of society. I discovered this syndrome on the job because many of my employers turned out to have this psychopathy. Thom Hartmann has pointed out that an alarming majority of our CEOs are sociopaths. I think our lassez faire capitalistic system encourages it. It's actually hard to be one hundred percent honest and honorable in business. That and I'm sure many of our high profile politicians are also, so I believe.
Thanks for posting this and so appropriate when I just ran into an acquaintance who suffered a traumatic divorce from her husband of forty years and the father of her children, who it turns out has a narcissistic psychopathy. He had been leading a double life and cheating on her with multiple women over all those years and any number of other shady doings. So you can be even married to one and not know it until one of the hidden things comes to surface.

I hope your friend gets some sort of peace from that trauma.

(75,480 posts)It turns out all the friends they had as a couple, only tolerated him because they liked her. When they divorced they dropped him like a hot potato. Right now no one knows where he is, or cares actually.

(19,841 posts)that this pathology is infecting this country in a big way. Rampant now are the political predators, business exploiters, justice system abusers, mass media moguls & propagandists--
And these types tend to support each other. The problem is huge.

(75,480 posts)these people the largesse to literally get away with murder and do it legally. That whole era we went through when we torturing POWs was a sociopath's dream and it was legal and applauded.

Yes I think the legal system has a lot to do with it. Complicity with the PTB
I also think the lack of integrity in business schools is a big factor. Business is where you go to learn how to exploit.
I also fault the (now right wing) mainstream media. (Hate radio is in a class all by itself--and also supporting the oligarchy very well). But it is the wealthy closet sociopathic PTB--the ones eating Kobe beef and truffles--that really scare me. They have too much power and they have no soul.
They are destroying all that once was good about this country.

(75,480 posts)I think the usury rates I get charged on my credit card are dishonest but I can't turn them over to the law because the law says it's okay. It used to not be okay. The most a bank could charge you was 18% per year. Today the interest rates are what the Mafia used to charge illegally for loans. It's insane.

(46,179 posts)many of those characteristics sound very much like the national characteristics that so much of the population of the U.S. take pride in, wallow in, whether they hold any power or not. The illusion of power calls them.

(5,714 posts)But most people in America have precious little power over their own lives-because society is highly stratified and hierarchically organized.
If you can't have much power over your own life, you often escape into opiates and false consciousness. You identify with your oppressors, because they are the only ones who have power in society-both over their own lives, as well as over the lives of everyone else. Including yourself. Better to identify with power, then to admit that you are powerless.
Our capitalist society of hyper-individualism tells us that the rich are rich because they are better, smarter, more hard-working, and thus, more deserving than the rest of us. And it tells this to everyone-regardless of class status-from the beginning of our lives onward. And people pass these attitudes on, generation after generation.
As a wise man once said,"The ruling ideas of any epoch are the ideas of its ruling class."
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)is a big part of that delusion.

(20,002 posts)More like the norm in a climate of aggressive, predatory, globalized capitalist oligarchy bordering on if not meeting the definition of neofeudalism. The world is owned and operated by some of the worst bastards ever to live IMO. They'll probably tell you that's what it takes to "succeed."

(8,646 posts)about psychopaths:
http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/episodes/the-psychopath-next-door
Sadly, I'm not sure my American friends can watch it (unless they go by proxy server?) since I think the CBC blocks some things. But the documentary was very interesting. As someone who WAS married to a 'high functioning' (and, I guess, 'bloodless' afaik) sociopath, I find all research on it very interesting. Some of the most interesting reading I have found on corporate psychopaths was in a textbook for one of my business classes. The business world is well aware there is a problem, however some corporations like it that way, even though workplace psychopaths are proven to be less productive.
Anyway, thanks for the thread. Important information, IMO.
