Relatives bid farewell to Akai Gurley, man fatally shot by NYPD rookie, during emotional funeral service in BrooklynThe emotional scene inside the Brown Memorial Baptist Church Saturday opened the funeral service for the 28-year-old who lost his life in a pitch-black public housing complex stairwell in East New York, Brooklyn. More than 150 mourners including several pols attended the funeral.

Gurleys younger brother, Malachi Palmer, tried to read a poem to the mass of mourners, but it was largely unintelligible. Palmer couldnt stop crying.

(7,404 posts)When we see the pictures of Michael Brown lying on the street for hours - it hurts.
When we see the videos of Eric Garner under 4 policemen pleading for a breath - it hurts.
But when we see the effect of the losses caused by imbuing weak men with the power to kill legally - it's devastating.

As an aside however, I'm sure the rookie's defense is that it couldn't be a racist shooting. After all, in a pitch black stairwell...how could he tell the victim was black. Ya know what I'm sayin'. It's as valid a defense as any going around the grand jury circuit for these killers.

(17,997 posts)This is not a personal attack. I have nothing whatsoever against you.
Your statement about Akai Gurley's murder not being racially motivated us just incomprehensible to me.
They were not supposed to be doing "vertical checks." They are not supposed to have guns drawn without reason. It is a building with almost all, if not all, residents that are people of color. One shot. One time gun is fired and it hits the black guy in the stairwell. Light came in through door.
Seems it is an awful big, unbelievable, coincidence that it just happened to hit the black guy.
Cop was doing things he shouldn't be doing and was scared shitless. He sees a black guy come through the door and shoots.

(18,124 posts)they were being sarcastic myself, otherwise my bad in agreeing.

(17,997 posts)Then my bad. It didn't read that way to me. I hope it was.

It can be hard sometimes to tell sarcasm, and I have misread more than one post the wrong way.
This one, tho, "sounded" like bitter sarcasm to me.

(60,167 posts)Sometimes I have to ask, politely, how a person meant something they said.
No one seems to mind clarifying their comment, at least in my experience.

(14,881 posts)Not the poster's opinion of the killing, but the poster's opinion of the defense the rookie would put forward.

(7,404 posts)Clearly I should have used the little
My point in making the comment is the absolutely insane twists and turns made in these situations to rationalize the irrational. In almost all cases, the police defense starts with the phrase "I was afraid that..." and by the time they're done, there's a big black demon in the story.
And there's always the apologist's refrain "but it wasn't about race". Bull f'ing chit. As I said in another thread, you think cops are doing to drop into some white suburb with a bunch of flash-bangs and assault rifles. Hell no.
All I was saying, and obviously doing it poorly, is that the apologist refrain in this case will be "Oh My...this couldn't have been about race...the stairwell was pitch black so the policeman may have been shooting a white guy". (right - in the projects...a white guy).
Sooooooo.....I should have put the sarcasm thingy in place. Nothing could justify this murder.
Sorry for the consternation.

Didn't think the first thing I'd venture into on DU this morning would put me in tears, but it did.

(18,124 posts)all unnecessary tears because the american system of policing is out of control, mean, vicious and yes, racist.

(108,999 posts)Despite that people are being murdered in the streets left and right, not a single thing will be done about American gun laws. Not one damn thing. Some guy allegedly sneaks a bomb aboard an airplane, or in a water bottle, the TSA can't get their new toys fast enough. But thanks to the National Rifle Association and ALEC, we're closer to legalized murder than we are to anything else. Fuck this shit.

And now the torture report... I'm pretty much out of reasons to stay in the USA. Unless there is a quantum change in our society, as soon as my kids are grown and making it on their own, I'm looking for a new home..

(17,997 posts)To watch these families grieve. It's heartbreaking to watch as they, time and again, receive not only no justice, but watch as they have to hear how the murderers of their loved ones are vindicated, excused, even congratulated for their cowardice.
Just heartbreaking.

(90,423 posts)DAMN. It's a beautiful and poignant and painful portrait, this photo. Sad as hell. WHY do we put our fellow Americans through this - again and again and again - and yet again??? WHY? WHY do they have to walk this path of never-ending tears?
Just DAMN.
