I am sick at what is occurring
I see patients every day on SS disabilty who have no reason to be on it
Girl with a deviated septum
Man w back pain who works as a firewood cutter
Girl with a seizure disorder- Never been on meds or had a seizure
Young man born premature-no health problems
All on SS disability
And that is just in the last two days

(5,390 posts)It took two years to qualify my son, in the mean time the medical bills mounted and we had to sell our home to continue care.
btw did I mention we had "cadillac" health insurance.
He is now an adult (33) and he is not getting rich on $865.00 a month. I still cover the cost of a lot of his medical.

It is not very easy to receive your benefits even with medical proof. I believe you are merely guessing at the state of the health of those you speak of or you are repeating stuff you "heard" on the Internets and mistakenly took propaganda for testimony.
Do you have any proof?
Also what are your thoughts on SS disability used as intended?

(4,739 posts)I am not sure where you are seeing this. Are you looking at people's files or claims? Are you just seeing people with these issues going into an office? Getting SS disability is exceedingly difficult. They don't just hand it out to everyone who asks for it. Too, people get it for a variety of reasons that are not necessarily visible to the eye. So where are you getting your examples?

(8,933 posts)I would qualify for disability according to my doctor because I have a mental illness. I have never tried to get it because I always felt I could work, but the fact that I can barely get myself out of the house says plenty. Could I work? I don't know.
The thing is, that there are a lot of people who might 'look' like they are just fine. But you have no way of knowing what is going on. My husband has back pain and yet cuts wood and lifts heavy things because he has to.
How about my niece.... She is legally blind and learning disabled. She has had hip surgery and will have another soon. She is 7 years old. My sister has only tried to get her medicaid as the health bills are killing them. But they apparently make too much to qualify. I know that is off topic, but I couldn't help myself.
I had a friend who worked picking cherries. He had so many problems and was denied disability three times. He had to stand on his feet and work all day when he was in pain. Yet he was denied. And for the record, to look at him you probably would have said the same thing.... he did finally get his disability btw.... to you he would not look disabled, but he is.

True reform can never happen as long as about 33% of the public, with support of corrupt politicians, spout off misinformation matching your post.
Unless SOME people GET REAL and stop w/ the mind games, no reform will be forthcoming.

(3,580 posts)I have heard many people say similar things. First of all, I don't think anyone would ever say there is no one on SS disability (about 12 million) who should not be getting it. There are always a few who manage to put one over on us. That being said, it is not easy to get on SS, or to stay on it. Frivolous claims get weeded out pretty fast. The number of fraudulent claims are minimal. A couple of observations though. Many times people do not understand their own problems well. Lots of would apply citing "bad back" or "headaches." Then you see the medical records and you see that yes, their back hurts but the real problem is schizophrenia or hallucinations. I had one young woman apply because she had calluses on her fingers. It turned out that she heard Jesus talking to her on her car radio.. Also, people will somtimes not tell you their real diagnosis for fear of embarassment. It is, in this case as well as in life in general, not to judge or generalize about people until you are sure you have enough information.

(9,103 posts)First of all, are you talking about SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)? These are two entirely different programs, and if you don't understand the difference then you can't possibly know anything about your "patients."
To get on SSDI one has to have been in the workforce and paid into the system for a certain number of quarters. So any "girl" with a "deviated septum" or "girl" with epilepsy couldn't possibly qualify, unless by "girl" you mean woman, in which case you're being sexist.
A girl "with a seizure disorder" whose never had a seizure and is not on meds would never qualify for SSI, period.
"Prematurity" without any other condition would never qualify as a disability under SSI or SSDI, period.
To get on SSI or SSDI you need to get a doctor to sign a sworn statement testifying that the condition is indeed disabling. You have to provide medical records and documentation on the disability. Then you have to go through an SSA approval process. Then you need to be periodically re-certified as continuing to have a disability.
There may be a few instances of abuse, but for every one of those there are hundreds of people who should be on the rolls but get stymied by the bureaucratic hoops you have to jump through to qualify. Among them: if you don't have health insurance, how do you get to see a doctor willing to evaluate you, so you can qualify and thus get health insurance? The system historically has been riddled with such Catch 22s--which always work to keep deserving people out of the system, as opposed to non-disabled people in.
Peddle your BS somewhere else.

(5,005 posts)My son works for a law firm that handles SSDI claims. People call in with absolutely no medical history, compaining of being 'forgetful' or 'getting easily confused'. Without medical diagnosis and documentation to back it up, the firm will not touch such cases, as they will surely lose.
Almost all claimants use an attorney these days, and the rule (at least here in Massachusetts) is that the firm only gets paid if the case is approved. So, logically, they will not touch cases that have little or no chance of approval.
It may have been different back in the day, but today it is very difficult to get approved for SSDI.

As a disabled person, I can tell you I spent a whole lot of time, money trying to hide my disability. Especially from employers who discriminate against the disabled.

(109 posts)I deal with it constantly. I do not get any type of government aid, as I have been VERY FORTUNATE to marry comfortably and have connections with people who find me jobs when needed.
I know it is hard not to judge things you may deem "not handicapped enough", but you most likely will be wrong. Dealing with misconceptions is, quite honestly, the hardest part of losing my hearing. Maybe you think they can work, most likely than can, the problem is finding people willing to hire them based on the EMPLOYERS ridiculous assumptions.

Do you think the cost of living is higher or lower for her?
Because she works, she doesn't get much from SSI, but her position is not the most secure one on the planet either.
There are a lot of things I'm sick of seeing, but SSI doesn't even make the list.

(6,488 posts)I have been since the age of 39. I didn't want it; I wanted to go on working. I liked my job and the people I worked with. But when you have a heart attack at 38 and have six clogged arteries that require open heart surgery, you recover and try to go back to work. When, a year later, you're diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, it's impossible to hide your condition any longer. Believe me, alot of people try to hide their medical conditions. When I go out, I wear my braces and a cane, but I try to walk straight and tall. I exaggerate my normal gait so I won't look feeble. It wears me out. As for my heart, I do everything my doctor tells me to do, but after three hours of normal activity, I can't do any more. Some people just think I'm a "homebody", and I'd rather that they think that than know the truth. It's just pride, I know. But disabled people have pride, too.

If you want preserve entitlements, you also don't load them down in red tape out of the extreme fear that everybody is stealing from them. Our troll wants to spread that fear. He deserves "way too far in the other direction," and after you smack-down the delusion, then you can get a separate thread on how common abuse really is.
