He had a crazy wingless airplane idea that they were willing to give a try. The result was about what you might imagine.

All have 'secret' US government/military divisions where employees have to have security clearances and are sworn to secrecy under pretty severe penalties. ..what is the point of this... SR71? Not too secret, there is one hanging in a museum 30 miles from me. .
