(4,876 posts)One of the things I find amusing about the direction the PWB have taken us is they keep saying "We're making you safer". Seriously? Does anyone feel.. fucking safer? 13 years after 9/11 does anyone out there feel one bit safer?

(6,956 posts)Please also look at the post #1 in the linked thread. It's that point that provides some context to my response.
One of the major sources of stress in my life is observing and understanding what my own government is doing in earnest to destroy Democracy and replace it with Oligarchy.
I don't need the full force of the U.S. government to keep me safe from terrorism, because I'm a rational thoughtful intelligent person that understands the concept of PROBABILITIES. And the probability of any of us dying from a terrorist attack on U.S. soil is equal to being hit by lightning and a crashing 747 simultaneously.
So I don't need or want them to do anything extraordinary to keep me safe, but I wish they wouldn't stress me out and leave me in constant fear of the future of our country and the planet because our government has become completely dysfunctional and now treat average Americans as a form of enemy combatant.
I wish they would keep us all safe from further Oligarchy, as that's having a direct negative impact upon every American citizen, especially those of us boomers that know of an America that was just, equal, noble and built upon basic democracy and shared prosperity.

(32,139 posts)Fear of terrorism, fear of the groups in our own society we have been trained to hate, fear of not having a job, fear of not working enough to keep your job, fear of not being able to afford basics like food and shelter and medical care, fear of militarized police, fear of surveillance, fear, fear, fear, fear, fear.

(21,115 posts)All boats rose together...until 1979....Ronald Reagan and Trickle Down economics....thats when the Military Industrial Complex with the help of the Republican Party....started us down this slide....started discounting the least among us as "Welfare Queens".....and the Racists bought into that....and then it was just selling that bunch of low information voters....just give them some plausible deniability...sugar coat that nasty poison and they will swallow it hook line and sinker and not ever check the logic...not a second thought...

(45,274 posts)The OP said "It's only a huge mistake if you think the POWERS THAT BE that actually run America have any interest what so ever in maintaining the USA as a Democratic Republic as envisioned by the founding fathers and maintained thusly from 1776 to around 1980 or so."

(6,956 posts)I've been on DU since 2003 and this is the first time such a thing has ever happened.
It's a nice feeling, as it's just nice to connect with others that have a similar POV. An it's nice to realize I'm not posting merely for my own amusement, which is frankly how it feels most of the time.
But I persevere. Like my hero Frank Zappa, when asked for the secret of his success; "First, don't stop. Second, keep going."
This is actually a fulfillment of what I feel are my obligations of citizenship. I think my Stony Brook Long Island public education really did a great job teaching me American History. Our Founding Fathers really did do a lot of heroic things to strive to create a more perfect union. And we owe them a debt for that legacy and we should honor it by learning it and respecting it and following it and improving it.
And that's what pisses me off about modern American Oligarchy; it disrespects everything we as Americans are supposed to stand for!
It's too bad the founding Fathers weren't in the White House on 9-11. Wait. That's ridiculous. If they were, there would have been no 9-11 in the first place!
