we put him in hospice this week and he passed away at 10:45AM PST today. He was a great champion of civil and lgbt rights...he was my father for 41 years taking me in as an orphan at 15 years old. My dad had died because of the Vietnam war and my mom had a stroke. He was a Lutheran pastor and wonderful person..my heart is aching and I will miss him deeply!

My heartfelt sympathy goes to both of you. My dad (stepfather), who I adored, died almost 11 years ago and it still hurts just as much today. I think time just makes it not hurt as frequently. The only consolation is in knowing how blessed we were to have shared our lives with them.

(12,377 posts)In my case Dad was in his nineties and wracked with cancer. For me it was a celebration that he was going home for Christmas. Still and all, I had my meltdown moments... He was much loved.
Thanks for your kindness, sweetie...
the hardest part will be this coming Monday at the wake.

My sympathies to you both!

I learned from the death of my father that grief becomes manageable over time, but what will always stay with you are the lessons you learned. He will always be with you, and that will help you go on.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

(4,412 posts)and I say this a lot to but never stop talking to him. My Father died in 2008, never met anyone quite like him, beyond uber liberal. Anyway I still talk to him, everyday, he's my voice of reason always. My best to you and yours as you work through your grief.
