When it comes to astonishing dental stories, India is miles ahead in 2014.
Back in July, doctors removed 232 teeth from a teenage boys mouth in a single operation in Mumbai.
On Friday, a seven-year-old child had 80 teeth removed from his upper jaw after nearly four hours of surgery at the Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital in the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Dr Maheshwari told The Times of India, "The patient had visited us five days ago with abscess in upper jaw. Upon medical investigations, it was diagnosed a case of odontoma. We planned the surgery and removed 80 teeth after clearing abscess, which is rare in tender age."
Odontoma is a rare type of tumor affecting the jaw or gums that sees a concentration of tooth-like structures.
Local reports named the boy as Vivek. He had apparently developed a tumour on the left side of his mouth and was taken to MY hospital after treatment in his village failed to remedy his situation.

(6,335 posts)It sounds like the tumor screwed up the gene that stops more teeth from developing which goes back about 400 million years ago to original fish! The first teeth developed from skin scales and were hundreds. Heres a N. American fish that looks like it has the same problem.

I've never seen fish teeth like that. Don't fish usually have pointy teeth?

(11,843 posts)It is a sheepshead. https://www.google.com/search?q=Archosargus+probatocephalus&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
They eat, along with just about anything, shellfish, so they have some gnarly teeth. But the sheephead fish's dentition has zilch to do with "the environment" when the phrase is used as being something to do with pollution.
And it's a total tangent to the OP.

(28,762 posts)in Indiana the locals call them perch. Never could figure out why they call them that. Perch to me is either walleye or yellow perch, but then I fished up in Minnesota and Canada more than I did around here.
I know the picture had nothing to do with the OP, I was just puzzled on that N. American fish.
Thanks!
