A thread of support for Mayor Bill de Blasio

The world can see, plain as day, what is happening: de Blasio is facing an insurrection by NYC's police department because he wants all of that force to obey the law, and to act in a manner that civil society demands.

When the keepers of law and order permit wanton lawlessness within their own ranks, things can only end terribly. Let us hope that Mayor de Blasio has the wisdom, strength and courage necessary to win this battle; if he loses, Democracy loses.

The union president escalated a bad situation and is blaming de Blasio for the bad behavior of the cops. If there is one true thing every cop should know is NEVER ESCALATE an already tense situation.

It looks really bad on the NYPD from here. I have yet to see anything that de Blasio said or did that would justify such a stunning display of disrespect.

Hate to say it, but somebody would be in for some petty retribution if it were me. (And I *know* that isn't right.)

... if a public servant does not want to serve the public, he or she needs to find another job.

Now the union should be about protecting employees from abuse, but insisting that police avoid killing people is not abuse. The solution may be for the voters to figure out who names the police commissioner (I don't know what NYC's system is) and then do something about that.

though it would be an unusual for one not to do so publicly. The last example that recently happened got Chief Garcia fired (who the unions opposed which carried over to city hall) but his comments seem genuine.

NYPD Commissioner Says Snubbing Mayor de Blasio Was 'Inappropriate'

A day after hundreds of NYPD officers, in an act of defiance, turned their back on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as he spoke at a funeral for Officer Rafael Ramos, who was killed along with Officer Wenjian Liu earlier this month, New York City Police Commissioner defended the mayor and said the officers' act was "very inappropriate."

"That funeral was held to honor Officer Ramos, and to bring politics, to bring issues into that event, I think was very inappropriate and I do not support it," said Commissioner Bill Bratton on CBS' Face The Nation. "He is the mayor of New York. He was there representing the citizens of New York to express their remorse and their regret at that death.

"At the same time," he added, "it is reflective unfortunately of the feelings of some of our officers at this juncture—about not just the mayor but, I think, about some of the many issues that are afflicting the city at this time." He admitted that "morale in the department at this time is low, there's no getting around that," noting contract negotiations with the city as well as national dialogues about relations between police and communities of color.

However, Bratton defended de Blasio: "This is a mayor that cares very deeply about New York City police officers, cares very deeply about the divide in this city at this time and is working very hard to heal that divide."

Both want to court that "Reagan Democrat" that has been the bane of the nation for 30 years, that so called liberal who nonethless wants to keep those people that scare them locked up.

As for the insurrectionist cops, along with the PBA's president Lynch, they ought to face federal insurrection charges.

No police, military, or militia (National Guard or State Guards) ought be become a paramilitary occupying force, making them a law unto themselves. They're supposed to be subject to civilian authority, not the other way around.

As William Lloyd Garrison often remarked, POSTERITY WILL SAY THAT YOU WERE RIGHT.

If your opponents prevail, there will be no posterity, and not for them either. Theirs is a way of pride that leads to destruction.

Few politicians have his keen and earnest sense of right and wrong. Few have his sincere willingness to listen and learn. He is a true progressive who emphatically does NOT dislike the police. Indeed, many police (of all colors and creeds) have been supporters over the years. But he gets what it is like to be a person of color and to have to deal with the police (both good and bad).

He's not losing this. Not happening.
